Boston Area YMCA Member Continues Improbable Run Through NBA Playoffs

As the Boston Celtics dispatched of the Chicago Bulls in one of the greatest first round playoff series ever, the dream lives on for Waltham, Massachusetts resident and YMCA gym rat Brian Scalabrine. Scalabrine who won the Dunkin Donut's "Play with the Celtics" contest back in early March has amazingly become a contributor for the defending NBA Champions. Due to injuries to the likes of Kevin Garnett and Leon Powe, Scalabrine has actually been pressed into service which, according to Head Coach Doc Rivers, was "not part of the plan."

Scalabrine, who fans and spectators widely agree doesn't even look like an NBA player, knocked down several clutch three pointers in the Game 7 victory this past Saturday evening. "At first I was like 'who is this dude? do we really need to run a contest for more publicity?" said Celtics team captain Paul Pierce. "But after we signed Marbury, I guess anything would make sense at this point."

Startled Celtics fans originally mistook Scalabrine for actor and MTV Rock n' Jock basketball star Michael Rappaport when he checked in at the end of a blowout against the Milwaukee Bucks in early April. This was quickly ruled out by the TD Banknorth Garden public address announcer who introduced the newest Celtic. Contest rules required the winner appear in at least one minute of one game. "I honestly never thought I'd have to call his number again," chuckled Rivers after the Game 7 win.

Whether or not Scalabrine will see any more time is debatable as the Celtics prepare for the second round matchup with the Orlando Magic. "Wow, Dwight Howard, I'm gonna be on the same court as Dwight Howard!" said Scalabrine. "This is almost as exciting as when we took down the Fenway Freaks in the 2003 "Y" Title Game."

"I don't see how eating 136 munchkins in under five minutes qualifies you to be an NBA player, but bottom line is white boy can shoot," noted star guard Ray Allen.

Scalabrine is of no relation to the former USC Trojans star of the same name.

The Celtics and Magic series gets underway tonight at 8pm eastern on TNT.
