Save Duquesne Swimming

A good friend of HHR's asked us to share this. We ask you to do what you can to help out.

-------

Getting up well before dawn and driving to a pool in the middle of winter just to get an extra practice in may not seem like a lot of fun to most. But to a choice few, it was our ticket to college.

I was a late bloomer in the swimming world; I did not get enchanted by long hours of chasing the black line down the middle of the pool until my junior year of high school. I was lucky enough to be surrounded by great swimmers and coaches that saw a glimmer of talent and pushed me in the right direction. I had finally found my calling in the pool.

After two years of toiling away and getting progressively faster it was time to start calling colleges and trying to find out if I was fast enough to join them.

I had a few great offers to local schools but really wanted to spread my wings. I was fortunate enough to find Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA. It was about as far from Seattle as I could get and I was ecstatic to have found a home, both to study and to swim.

It has been over a decade since I graduated and I have jumped back in from time to time, but nothing ever feels as good as it did swimming at that school. Yeah, we had a small pool; yeah we were not the best team in the country. But we were proud to wear the Red and Blue and train our asses off for our school and for each other. Those were some of the best times of my life. I still talk to the guys (and ladies) that I swam with. For four short years they were my family, and many still are today.

On January 25th of this year a team meeting was called and the Men’s program was informed that this would be their last season. To say these guys were shocked is an understatement. They had two duel meets left and their conference championships are quickly approaching.

Duquesne unceremoniously decided to drop the Men’s Swimming, Golf, Wrestling and Baseball programs on that day.

The Athletic Department has stated that he decision was a “financial” one and that this will help them better allocate funds that will make the other programs “more competitive.” Strange, since last year the Men’s Swimming program placed 3rd in the Atlantic Ten conference. This must have something to do with the stellar basketball and football programs needing more money. I am not one to bag on another program (but you can look at their seasons and decide for yourself).

I am not even upset that the school has to make cuts – but come on – give these kids a little dignity and at least a chance to do something about it. They were not warned at the beginning of the season, or the end of last season that this may be happening. This is just another example of an Athletic Department and the school in general not handling its money very well – and now a program that has turned the tide to become successful is being hurt.

Well a few of them are not taking it laying down, and as an alumni neither am I, there has already been a fierce letter writing and calling program asking for definitive reasoning why the program is being dropped (note: the Women’s program is safe, for now, and they use all of the same equipment and coaching staff, as well as travel with the Men’s program for the majority of meets). The calls seem to have fallen on deaf ears and the University is really not responding to the now constant taunting in the press and on blogs.

Feel free to join in on that fracas, since the University’s spokesman are hiding and not coming out to the press, save for the nice little press release that came out the same day that the cuts were announced to the team. Here is a link to the original Q&A that let everyone know the teams were being dropped.

If you would like to contact the AD, his name is Greg Amodio, amodiog@duq.edu, and I am sure he would love to hear from those out there that hate to see “non-revenue” generating sports get cut at Division I Schools. If you do decide to write, please be positive – the guys on the team have gone out of their way to make sure that they are showcasing the positive aspects of the team to the press. It seems that they are getting a lot of attention in the Pittsburgh press about it as well.

The real rub is that the team has been notified that in order to save the program we will need to have a $4 million endowment to keep it going. Odd since the pool is already built, the Women’s team is not going anywhere and they do not travel to Japan on a weekly basis for practice and meets, but ok. You want $4 million to keep the program running; we are going to raise it.

So far the raising has been off to a good start and several anonymous donors who have extended large donations for the next 5 years. I am not privy to how much, but I am SURE it is nowhere near the $4 million needed. Here is your chance to help…

Save this program so they don’t disappear like University of Washington, UCLA, Kutztown University, University of New Hampshire and countless other teams in a multitude of other sports.

Go to http://saveduquesneswimming.bbnow.org/donate.ph and make any size donation you can. Don’t do it for me, do if for the Duquesne Dancing Bear, the Mighty Duke, any swimmer you have ever met, your friend who lost their keys down the drain at the King County Aquatics Center, the kids who dive into the fountains on academic walk and take your quarters so they can do laundry. Give as much as you can. Be the difference, keep this program alive!

It's hard to see she is crying when she spends her days in water

Oh it's so God damn hard being a single, hot 21-year-old Olympic swimmer. After hospice workers and the guys that empty Port-O-Johns, this broad has it the worst.

ALL Australia's sexiest swimmer Stephanie Rice wants for Christmas is a new boyfriend. But the 21-year-old triple Olympic gold medallist said finding love was tough. In a revealing interview with The Daily Telegraph, Rice told of how her life spiralled out of control after the Beijing Olympics, leading her to dump her management team International Quarterback and take control of her own affairs. After her stunning Olympics success, she was publicly linked to American swimming superstar Michael Phelps, bad boy Aussie swimmer Nick D'Arcy, Sydney rugby league star David "Wolfman" Williams and long-time training partner Brendan Capell.

Spiraled out of control! She was spotting dating and enjoying herself! It was a nightmare the average person could only hope to avoid.

Not to make a silly pun, but could you expand the dating pool just a little Steph. Stop dating swimmers and athletes and broaden your horizons. You should start hanging out at blogging conventions, flirting on Twitter, or meet me at the Arby's in one hour.

If you must date a swimmer, I'd try and hit the pool at a different hour. Senior Citizen swim is 7 a.m. sharp. That isn't a wacky noodle between his legs. Well it is but not the type you're thinking of.

Add Hypocrite to List of Michael Phelps Accolades

Alluding to the fact that the still-legal Arena X-Glide swimsuit (to be banned in 2010) was the main factor in his loss to German Paul Biedermann in the 200-Meter Freestyle at the world swimming championships, Michael Phelps whined, "It's going to be fun next year when swimming is back to swimming."

If true to his word in longing for purer, un-enhanced competition, Phelps, a paid endorser of Speedo and wearer of the company's LZR Racer, should simply return contract money and advocate for swimming naked.

US coach Bob Bowman observed, "The (polyurethane) suits make you go out with ... much less energy cost, so at the end you have a punch. Michael had to work so hard to stay with him for 150, then it's just not there at the end. That's what the suits do. The energy cost is reduced going out, so you finish a lot better."

Interestingly, as the Wall Street Journal pointed out last year, polyurethane was a noted component in the design of the LZR:

It featured a "compression zone" around the torso and other parts of the body that reduced muscle and skin vibration, allowing swimmers to conserve more energy. And Speedo engineers, aided by tests in NASA wind tunnels, applied thin polyurethane panels on the swimsuit to minimize drag.

Despite the fact that the LZR started this technological race, Bowman (a paid endorser for Speedo himself) bellows a cry reminiscent of the most ardent baseball purists, "We've lost all the history of the sport. Does a 10-year-old boy in Baltimore want to break Paul Biedermann's record? The sport is in shambles right now and they better do something or they're going to lose their guy who fills these suits."

Video: Michael Phelps on Today Show Talks about his "Mistake;" Doesn't Actually Admit what "Mistake" Was

Michael the Merman was confronted by Matt Lauer for the swimmer's first televised interview since the pictures of him smoking the reefer surfaced.

Frankenphelps pulls a helluva "Giambi" by not actually admitting his what his "mistake" was.

Look, we aren't condoning illegal drug use by any stretch. But the kid's right. This is nothing compared to his DUI. He's the victim of someone who wanted to make a buck, and his own poor judgment in perpetrating a victimless crime in public.

Assassin Avenue: America's Chronic Problem

Ed Note: HHR does not condone illegal drug use unless it enables the user to hit lots of homeruns for our favorite baseball team. That said, contributor Assassin Avenue makes a strong case that we really need to stop the insanity perking up from the latest Phelpsian scandal.

Yes, I pulled a Costas and used the adjective "Phelpsian."

News broke today that Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott says he will charge Michael Phelps with a crime if he determines the Olympics hero smoked marijuana in Richland County.

Surely this has got to be the straw that breaks the camel's back as it relates to America's insane attitude towards Marijuana. We are retroactively going after Michael Phelps for a little harmless fun? You have got to be kidding me.

A brief bit of history: in 1937 the F.D. Roosevelt administration crafted 1937 Marihuana Tax Act the first national US law making cannabis possession illegal in the US via an unpayable tax on the drug. The real reason this happened was that blacks in the South were growing their own pot and smoking it instead of buying alcohol. The alcohol lobby banned together and whamo – now a plant that grows just about anywhere is illegal.

This prohibition regarding a plant (a plant!!) that makes the same amount of sense as prohibition for alcohol did (read: none).

You can't turn on the television in this country without seeing ad after ad re: pills. Drugs to make your dick hard, pills to keep your legs still, and sleeping pills with humorous (yet dangerous) effects just to make a few.

Yet we're going to retroactively prosecute the greatest Olympic Athlete of all time because a photo of him smoking a plant appeared on the Internet. The only rationale for this? Because that's the way we've always done things around here.

This is beyond insane. It's time for this Nation to grow up.

Maybe you disagree with me. If so, I just ask that you remember, come the 2012 Olympics, when you're cheering on Michael Phelps, you're watching a dope smoker kick everyone's butt. Reefer Madness indeed.

Michael Phelps: Butt Fondler

Star Magazine reports "Michael Phelps: Off the Deep End!" (Get it?):

"Just 11 days after a Disney World parade of honor, Michael was fondling the backside of a scantily clad dancer at the Las Vegas Playboy Club!"

With no justification whatsoever, HHR speculates that the dancer's name was "Lance."

Michael Phelps is Not a Sex Symbol, Has an Oedipus Complex, May Be Into Beastiality

World: No Kidding.

When speaking on his love life to People Magazine, the Olympian was more inclinded to "gush" over his English bulldog.

On female attention, Oedipus Phelps turned the conversation to his mother.
As for all the female attention he says, "I don’t really notice it. When I go out, go to dinner, I go out with friends, and we stay to ourselves. I don’t think of myself as a sex symbol. My mom is by far the most important woman in my life."

Pool Tang

Trusty correspondent Assassin Avenue spent the past few days at a boring conference. However, all was not lost because his hotel room had HDTV and the Olympics were on. In the spirit of pure journalism, Assassin Avenue paid close attention to women's swimming and can now award the "Hot Swimmer Medals of the 2008 Olympiad."

Bronze: Federica Pellegrini, Italy.
2008 Medal Talley: One Gold

Silver: Laure Manaudou, France
2008 Medal Tally: no medals, but has been involved in a Olympic Love Triangle

Gold: Stephanie Rice, Australia
2008 Medal Tally: Three Golds

Our gold medal winner's talent has not gone unnoticed in the land down under. Beyond her medals, her accomplished include being an underwear model, recently breaking up with her boyfriend, and some naughty facebook photos:

All hail the gold medal winner. She's got it all. Gold Medals, endorsement deals, and a hot accent that doesn't require feeling guilty about not speaking her native language.

And she's clearly thrilled at this honor:

Oooooh What a Rush!

Flamboyant tag team of Michael "Hawk" Phelps and "Animal" Garret Weber-Gale successfully held off a couple of neo dweeb maxis from France to retain the gold at the Great American Bash.

They now got their sites set on a couple Russian comrades.

Insult to Injury

The MSM golden Olympic boy Michael Phelps is set to break Mark Spitz’s Olympic record of seven gold medals. To rub salt into Spitz’s tear-soaked eyes, Phelps has decided to steal his signature mustachioed look.

"So what is it baby? Spitz or swallows?"

The Best the US Has to Offer

Last week when I received my Sports Illustrated in the mail, I noticed Michael Phelps was the cover athlete. Shortly after, I received this month's Men's Vougue which featured the swimmer in a fashion spread. I then saw a AT&T commercial with a "Phelp's Phan" and then Phelps practicing his Mandarin for Rosetta Stone.

Thinking back to when he dressed up as a merman for Disney, I began to wonder who thought this guy was such marketing gold. Forget the whole underage DUI thing. Let's look at the fact that he looks like a cross between the Oddities' Kurgan and Fred Gwynne and talks like he has a mouth full of cotton and pennies.

While I have no doubt Phelps is a world-class athlete, despite never seeing him compete, I'm not sure whether or not he is an upgrade from the last Olympic athlete that was shoved down our throat - ginger kid Shawn White who looks like a poor man's version of Budnick - the character Sam Drummond played in the Nickelodeon classic Salute Your Shorts.

Michael Phelps is a Beautiful Merman

Posing for Annie Leibovitz as part of the "Disney Dream Portrait Series, " drinking and driving enthusiast and Olympic hero, Michael Phelps, must be punch drunk mad in posing as a beautiful mermaid and becoming a "modern dancer."

Said Leibovitz:

"One of the most complicated shots I have ever done. I didn't know if it was going to work, what to expect. I have to tell you, he was beautiful. Michael put on that tail and ... he just became like a modern dancer. He just took to it and enjoyed himself and swam through this tank. I was blown away."

"It was kind of weird to be able to put on a tail and swim around in a tank," Phelps admitted. "To work with Annie and try these crazy sorts of ideas is really an honor and something I won't forget."

Neither will we.
