Carl Lewis Running...for Office?

South Jersey Democrats look to be taking a page out of the local GOP playbook by recruiting a well known athlete to run for office.

This morning, PolitickerNJ.com reported that 9-time Olympic gold medalist, one-time Perfect Strangers guest star, national anthemer and South Jersey native Carl Lewis will announce today that he is running for NJ State Senate as a Democrat in Legislative District 8 - coincidentally in a town encompassed in the Congressional District of freshman Republican Congressman (former Philadelphia Eagle) Jon Runyan; and in the same county as failed Assembly candidate (former Flyer) Brian Propp.

Lewis is nothing if not patriotic.

Olympian Robbed of Medal - Literally

USA Water Polo 2008 Olympic Silver Medalist Merrill Moses suffered a major loss out of the pool this past holiday season when his prized possession, the Silver Medal from the Olympic Games in Bejing was stolen. Along with several other family valuables including an Olympic ring, his Pepperdine 1997 NCAA title ring, and much of his mother's jewelry, Moses and his family are on the hunt to find their lost valuables. The heist occurred over the holidays when Moses was with family on vacation to propose to his now fiance. Sports Illustrated's Brian Cazeneuve has joined the hunt with his latest column. If you happen to come across this very specific medal, a 2008 Olympic Silver Medal engraved with water polo and #1 on it, please contact USA Water Polo at www.usawaterpolo.org or via twitter at twitter.com/usawp.

HHR Contributer Smacks Down Ray Lewis...and is Still Alive (For Now)

After Baltimore Raven rider Ray Lewis belittled the sport last week ("But we don’t need no hope. Y’all can keep your hope because we’ve got enough hope over here. We’re packing our bags, and we’re not packing our bags to come play water polo."), HHR water polo aficionado Greg Mescall challenges the linebacker to put his Speedo where his mouth is in the NYT's Fifth Down Blog today:

With all due respect to the luggage industry, what I get out of this is that Ray Lewis thinks water polo is easy. We know otherwise. Ray Lewis has distinguished himself as one of the greatest linebackers in the N.F.L. over his storied playing career. Now his career as a water polo player, that is something I’d like to see...

Take Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Dhani Jones, who played water polo with one of the top clubs in Europe, in Dubrovnik, Croatia, for his reality show. Or Dallas Mavericks point guard Jason Kidd, who told me at the 2008 Olympics that he once took part in a water polo practice with the California Bears men’s team back in college; he said it was brutal. As one reporter described the sport, water polo is “boxing plus sprinting plus basketball plus wrestling — with no floor beneath your feet.” Sounds about right...

So Ray, we welcome you to come play water polo — after the season, of course. Pack lightly; it’s a long time to stay above water.

2008 Olympian Brittany Hayes' Dog Is Fast, Really Fast

Olympians do lots of things once they are done playing. Some coach, go into broadcasting, get regular jobs, or in the case of 2008 Women's Water Polo Silver Medalist Brittany Hayes, they race wiener dogs. Say hello to Riley, a champion dachshund who is undefeated thus far in 2010. The folks at USA Water Polo caught up with Riley on another typical race day as he continues his march towards, you guessed it, WeinerNationals.

Athletes of Cirque du Soleil [Mathieu Bolillo]

When in Vegas for BwB 2.0, we stopped by Cirque du Soleil to see and interview some of the amazing athletes that Vegas has to offer. We got a chance to speak with Mathieu Bolillo, a former French gymnastic champion who now performs with Cirque du Soleil. Here Mathieu gives an inside view of what it takes to perform at this new level for almost 20,000 people a week.

Video: The Russian Four Sweep...It Was Terrible

Assassin Ave. offers his bootleg footage and amateur commentary on the highly artistic form, but inversely terrible outcome, of the famed "Russian Four Sweep."

He notes: "Not only did the Russians have the best looking team, they also had the most unique style, the Russian Four Sweep."

Canadian Hockey Fans: USA is Not OK

Part-time HHR contributor and full-time student in British Columbia, Assassin Avenue, was tasked with taking fan photos out and about Vancouver during the 2010 Winter Games. Unfortunately, claims of being "drunk" and "busy" hampered his efforts.

He did pass this one along, which could possibly insight an international skirmish.

CR Dunbar's Olympic Sized Bits and Pieces

  • The announcer yelled, "the Canadians are coming!" That's funny.
  • MSNBC is feeling uncomfortable with all this American flag waiving.
Why hasn't Olbermann joined his fellow NBC sportscasters?
  • Wikipedia was unhelpful in explaining the difference between Downhill, Super G, Super Combined, Giant Slalom and Slalom skiiing. I'm starting to doubt it as a viable source.
  • More skiing, more figure skating, more curling. Anything new left? Bobsledding? Are they too going to start from the juvenile post?
  • I know how Bode Miller feels. When I have the perfect Blood Alcohol Level, I am unstoppable too.

CR Dunbar's Olympic Sized Bits and Pieces

I am going to tap into the eye of the tiger for today's bits and pieces:
  • Americans had a bigger blowout last night than DJ Pauly D.
  • If Scott Hamilton's head explodes into a bloody stump tonight from all twirling excitement, what happens? I imagine they have a contingency plan for this.
  • Lindsey Vonn, so hot, want to touch the heiney. Aaaooo!
  • When reporters get bored, they get snippy. I blame the lack of "services" now available to keep them happy on Tiger Woods.
  • Surrender! (Keep an eye on Skier #2)
  • What's the equivalent in Canada of Americans having their picture on the Wheaties box? Labatt Blue 12-pack?
  • I haven't seen the bandanna try to make a comeback like this since Napoleon Dynamite.

CR Dunbar's Olympic Sized Bits and Pieces

  • Can't go skiing because it's snowing. I've been doing it wrong all these years.
  • The prominence of primetime figure skating in the Olympics reminds me of the Conan/Leno fight. The Baby Boomer generation will never move out of the way.
  • Nobunari Oda is the 17th descendant of Nobunaga Oda, a famous Japanese warlord. He honors his grandfather's warlord spirit with this outfit.
  • NBC is drawing the line at sending Lindsey Jacobellis to the Fail Blog.
  • Male athletes should stay away from slipping into the female biathlon hut when the Olympic Villiage inevitably becomes the lust village. You don't need a roid raged woman with impeccable endurance and mad sniper skills coming for you after a one night stand.
They already made Sirli Hanni from Estonia take a mug shot

CR Dunbar's Olympic Sized Bits and Pieces

  • The drama created by Johnny Weir and PETA has to be the worst contrived storyline of the games. All involved need to be Bob Barker'd: spayed or neutered.
  • The only one not threatened is Weir's beautiful new female roommate, Tanith Belbin.
  • How weird would it be to listen to Bob Costas' voice at a dinner party? Without staring at his head looking for hair-dye clumps.
  • Pretty sure the US men in snowboard cross were wearing jeans during competition. That's an Olympic sport I can appreciate.
  • Bode Miller is still relevant.
  • Speed skating was delayed because of track problems, so NBC switched to doubles figure skating, so I shoved a pencil in my eye. Didn't expect that reaction out of me.
  • It was cute when Canada had their gold medal ceremony. Someone should give little brother a noogie.

CR Dunbar's Olympic Sized Bits and Pieces

Who's the hotter breed? Skiers or swimmers?

I watched the Opening Ceremony with the sound off so I could experience it in a pure form without the distractions of sound. Or, I was at the bar and it happened to be on. Here's what I saw and my opening thoughts:
  • A Canadian Gandalf took on an inflatable giant bear.
  • Peter Pan founded Canada by learning to fly and grow corn.
  • The camera guys did a phenomenal job finding the tail in the large groups and provided the uncontrived balance with the ugly countries, ahem Latvia. Did they need to go any further than Sweden though? They lived up to the cliche.
  • Remember the episode of Family Guy where Peter asks if they could be with any girl who would it be and Quagmire answer Taylor Hanson from Hanson? Shaun White may have confused some men during the ceremony's parade of women.
  • Mad props to my boy from Skee town for carrying in the flag.
  • The question of the Olympic games may be who's the hotter breed? Skiers or swimmers? One is always wet, one always likes to go down. Bada bing.
  • I remembered that freestyle skiing is awesome, but now it is done. Figure skating will be on every night now.
  • With women's volleyball every night during the summer we at least were treated to PG-13 rated ample cheeks. With ice skating they use nylon fake skin or fur.

CR Dunbar's Olympic Sized Bits and Pieces

As shut-ins get tingly about the Winter Olympics Ceremony this evening, I thought it was a good time to dust off my own bits and pieces for the occasion. On with the show:
  • Is any reference to Brian Boitano still funny?
  • Plenty of pressure on Canadian Hockey to win gold. Only 13-year old Romanian gymnasts know this kind of pressure. However, whereas the gymnasts are left in a hot box if they fail, the Canadian hockey players will probably get big hugs.
  • I was looking for the winter equivalent of Summer Olympic's Handball that would sweep me off my feet and tell me I'm pretty, but it turns out there are only two team sports in the Winter Olympics: Hockey and Curling. Sorry scrubbers.
  • Look for Belarus Men's Freestyle Skiing Aerialist Anton Kushner to start a twitter signup war with CNBC.
  • First Winter Olympics since Blades of Glory. Iron Lotus references highly encouraged Scott Hamilton and Brian Boitano.

Paralympic Biathlete is Pretty Damn Cute

Last night on NBC's The Biggest Loser Couples, contestants found themselves training at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs with the likes of Gold Medalist Alpine Skier Julia Mancuso, Freestyle Skier Jeret "Speedy" Peterson, Speedskater J.R. Celski, Pairs Figure Skater Rockne Brubaker, Paralympic Gold Medalist Alpine Skier Alison Jones and Paralympic Biathlete Kelly Underkofler.

Not gonna lie. Underkofler is our new favorite biathlete and not because she can shoot or ski.

USA! USA! USA!

Olympics Warning: Canadians May Kill You

Olympic air space could be defended with lethal force.

The Vancouver Sun reports, "The Canadian Forces are ready to exercise "lethal force" in a worst-case scenario to defend new air space security restrictions being imposed during the 2010 Olympic Games."

Watch your ass, cowboy.

Canucks Kill (Steve Nash's) Arts

Before & After

Just like in high school, jocks are putting art lovers in their pace. Only this time, one of their own is caught in the whirlwind and the artists are fighting back.

In preparation for the upcoming Winter Games, the City of Vancouver has painted over a series of murals that were commissioned by the Steve Nash Foundation in 2007.

Artists, of course, decided to "retaliate" by stenciling messages over the now blue-painted walls.

We haven't seen this kind of public tit-for-tat since the DickChicken/Pussy Ham War of 2009.

We'll have Assassin Avenue keep an eye out for more as this battle rages on.

It's hard to see she is crying when she spends her days in water

Oh it's so God damn hard being a single, hot 21-year-old Olympic swimmer. After hospice workers and the guys that empty Port-O-Johns, this broad has it the worst.

ALL Australia's sexiest swimmer Stephanie Rice wants for Christmas is a new boyfriend. But the 21-year-old triple Olympic gold medallist said finding love was tough. In a revealing interview with The Daily Telegraph, Rice told of how her life spiralled out of control after the Beijing Olympics, leading her to dump her management team International Quarterback and take control of her own affairs. After her stunning Olympics success, she was publicly linked to American swimming superstar Michael Phelps, bad boy Aussie swimmer Nick D'Arcy, Sydney rugby league star David "Wolfman" Williams and long-time training partner Brendan Capell.

Spiraled out of control! She was spotting dating and enjoying herself! It was a nightmare the average person could only hope to avoid.

Not to make a silly pun, but could you expand the dating pool just a little Steph. Stop dating swimmers and athletes and broaden your horizons. You should start hanging out at blogging conventions, flirting on Twitter, or meet me at the Arby's in one hour.

If you must date a swimmer, I'd try and hit the pool at a different hour. Senior Citizen swim is 7 a.m. sharp. That isn't a wacky noodle between his legs. Well it is but not the type you're thinking of.

Audio: Magic Johnson Addresses Book Statements About Isiah

As part of promotion for their recently release book, When the Game Was Ours, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird took questions from journalists and bloggers. Upon the book's release, among the most talked about passages regarded Magic's admission that he was part of the opposition that likely prevented Isiah Thomas from joining the famed 1992 Olympic Dream Team. While seemingly content on letting bygones be bygones, Magic is still unapologetic about his revelations and apparently still disappointed by how his relationship with Thomas deteriorated. Magic also addresses the question as to whether Zeke's personality shortcomings had to do with his tumultuous tenure and subsequent divorce from the Knicks - a gig in which Johnson admits in the book he vouched for Thomas.

Magic on Isiah's Reaction and Looking to Move on

Magic on what made him reveal the nature of the incidents that led to their parting ways

Did Isiah’s personality attribute to his problems with the Knicks?

DC Bureau Investigative Report: Why The Olympics Went To Rio

Because a certain governor made a propaganda film for its bid behind Obama's back.
