Amidst the Hermaphrodite Runner Controversy, Everyone Fails to Recognize Gender Bias in Sports

Mystery solved.

The Sun reports that "South African gold-medallist [Caster] Semenya, 18, has both male and female organs, it was claimed."

The row over Semenya's biology has caused huge divisions — with South African politicians calling slurs she is a man "racist and sexist." Her birth certificate has the teen listed as female and urine tests showed that, despite her having higher than average male hormone levels, they are within the official limits for a woman.

The real issue being ignored is the fact that for all the outcry over social issues regarding equality, we still live in a segregated society in which women are not deemed worthy/skillful enough to compete against men. Women are being forced to compete separate from men because we view them as biologically inferior. That's simply wrong.

How do we expect our country to acknowledge same-sex marriage if we won't even allow men and women to run against one another? What's next? Mandating that men and women shower in separate locker rooms?

Richardson, only one from school to qualify for state, wins track team title

Bonnie Richardson ran. She threw. She jumped. And when it was time to hand out the team trophies, Richardson accepted the 1A team championship for Rochelle High School -- by herself. Bonnie Richardson of Rochelle High School scored 42 team points to win the Texas 1A track title.

Richardson won the high jump, placed second in the long jump, was third in the discus, won the 200 meters, and finished second in the 100 meters to defending champion.

Fine, Richardson, you win. But I bet the other teams had better after-parties.

Tonight the CBS Evening News ended their broadcast with a profile on 11-year-old Jayshawn Augusto. A 4'9" baller/track standout, who rarely misses a shot and can run a 4:40 mile, his aerobic metabolism is such that he hardly even sweats. Additionally, he's apparently pretty good in the classroom and seems to have his head on his shoulders. The 5th grader has even received ogling letters from UCLA.

My money is that he can already take Lil Romeo.

Hopefully he keeps the straight and narrow.

For three years, Gatorade's DC Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year "has worn a custom made suit that covers her head and neck as required by her faith." Now she says she's the victim of religious discrimination. We have to agree.

Officials at the Montgomery Invitational track meet told Juashaunna Kelly she had to remove her Muslim head covering if she wanted to compete.

Officials contend, rather, that it's simply the case that "association rules require undergarments be one single solid color." This justification is a little more palatable (baseball pitchers often face the same restrictions). But the problem is that in baseball this poses a relevant issue towards opposing batters seeing the pitch come at them. In an individual sport like track and field where people can get away with wearing stuff like this, where does the problem lie? If anything, Kelly is at a disadvantage with the extra drag.

Amateur athletes are allowed to get away with wearing irrelevant things like these and these, but a Muslim female has uniform restrictions. Doesn't make sense to me. Let her run.
