An Unforgiving Person: Crooked Former Politician Has No Stomach for Mike Vick

When former NJ US Senator Bob Torricelli announced he was dropping his bid for re-election under a cloud of ethical scandal, he asked, "When did we become such an unforgiving people? How did we become a society where a person can build credibility their entire life and have it questioned?"


Now an infrequent columnist on the NJ political site PolitickerNJ.com, "the Torch" wrote a scathing editorial against Vick and the Philadelphia Eagles, as well as some suggestion on how fellow football fans should treat those companies associated with the franchise.

I can only do it justice by sharing in its entirety...

The decision of who to support in this year's NFL match ups just got easier. I'm for anybody who plays against the Eagles.

Michael Vick is joining the team. The same man who just left a federal jail on felony counts involving the torturing and death of animals is about to reenter center stage. That's quite a message about the state of our culture and the role that NFL wants to play in our lives.

Homicide detectives sometimes track animal abuse because it's often the first act of mass murders. The same sociopathic behavior that takes pleasure in the suffering of an animal will migrate to the pleasure gained by harming a person. It's the same complete indifference to life. The killing of a helpless animal is not only unlawful but an act of depravity and sickness.

Think about Michael Vick. He trained dogs to maul and maim each other until death. When he was disappointed in them, he hung them by the neck. Their teeth were forcefully removed without anesthesia. Their torture became a means of his entertainment.

The talking heads on television describes him as a victim of "political correctness" and we're "denying him his right to make a living". What a sick society.

Let the Eagles make their choice. You should make yours. Watch every company that advertises during Eagles games and refuse to buy their products. Decent people should have no part in this charade. Sportsmanship used to involve more than athletic prowess. A sportsman was a person of character and a role model. It seems that the NFL has traded the notion of representing the best to allow the participation of the worst.

Bear in mind, Torricelli is from North Jersey - typically NY Football Giants country.

Somehow, I highly doubt this is the case thought...

Goldberg Defends Vick in `View' Debut

Frankly, I'm getting tired of this story. But, having already called out ShaNeNe Foxx and Starbury, I need to point it out to Whoopi Goldberg.

Goldberg said that "from where he comes from" in the South, dogfighting isn't that unusual.

"It's like cockfighting in Puerto Rico," she said. "There are certain things that are indicative to certain parts of the country."

Mark this day. You will never, ever hear these words uttered again: Thank God for Joy Behar, the voice of reason:

"How about dog torture and dog murdering?" Behar asked.

Exactly.

Fortunately, where I come from in the civilized universe, people still have some common sense. Kudos to you, Behar. Kudos to you.

Now, in the days before the word got out that Ookie was going to cop a plea bargain, you saw numerous individuals rallying in defense of Mr. Mexico. I'm talking about those individuals waving signs, voicing their support of the fallen superstar.

Hell, as late as this week you had Sha-nene stating on Access Hollywood:

“It’s a cultural thing, I think,” Jamie said. “Most brothers didn’t know that, you know. I used to see dogs fighting in the neighborhood all the time. I didn’t know that was Fed time. So, mike probably just didn’t read his handbook on what not to do as a black star.”

Now, I'm not sure whether or not Foxx was trying to be, to paraphrase Joel Gertner, "as tongue in cheek as a lesbian orgy" or not, but I'm certain Starbury (despite his retraction) meant no when sarcasm when he said:

“We don’t say anything about people who shoot deer and shoot other animals, you know what I mean. From what I hear, dogfighting is a sport. It’s just behind closed doors. And I think it’s tough that we build Michael Vick up and then we break him down.”

Here's my problem with the whole situation. It wasn't so much the dog fighting per se, or even the gambling that I found truly disturbing. Rather, it was the idea of Ookie killing these animals via drowning, electrocution & hanging that was so heinous. This isn't a "mistake" or a "lapse in judgment." This is the sign of a sick mind.

So today, as the plea was filed, the crux of the deal says Vick simply bankrolled the operation; denying wagering on the fights, and stopping short of admitting his involvement in the killings.

Why then, if we take the man at his word, would he simply bankroll this without having a financial stake in the matter? Sure, this is probably to circumvent the gambling issues associated with NFL rules, not to mention the IRS. But that just leaves him taking sick pleasure in the goings-on.

This isn't so much a hobby or an err in judgement, this is just, well...I don't know. Call it what you will. But it's not normal behavior, regardless of your cultural upbringing.
