Behind the Scenes: A-Rod Vita Coco Shoot

It can be argued that A-Rod has a long way to go before reaching the marketability pantheon in which teammate Derek Jeter hovers.

His recent break-up with a Hollywood starlet may or may not help that cause.

No Cameron?

No problem.

A-Rod joins some very Jeterian company in former crush Madonna, Matthew McConaughey and Demi Moore in pitching coconut water.

A far cry from cousin Yuri's secret Dominican elixir, the Yankee third basemen has incorporated the equally Island-infused Vita Coco into his regimen.

A-Rod: "My trainer suggested I try Vita Coco because of all the electrolytes and potassium, and now I drink it every day," says Alex Rodriguez. "The stuff really works."

Interestingly, Rodriquez's co-pitchman for the campaign's Boston kickoff is Red Sox sweetheart Dustin Pedroia.

What rivalry? It's all about understanding, finding common ground and enjoying some good all-natural coconut water.

A-Rod and Pedroia prefer all-natural alternative to artificial sports drinks – its super-hydrating effects helps them perform at their best on and off the baseball field.

MiLB Team Hosts Facebook Fans Night

In a world where wacky Minor League Baseball promotional shenanigans are all the norm, the Bowling Green Hot Rods tapped into another common societal element for their latest game-day marketing scheme - Facebook.
For more than two months, fans cast votes on a variety of elements they will see and experience on May 18. The winning elements are:

• Game Time: 6:35 PM (Gates open at 5:30 PM)
• Hot Rods Jersey Color: Red
• Food Special: $1 Nachos
• Merchandise Special: 20% off Adult Apparel
• Theme: '80's Night featuring music and video clips from the awesome '80's
• Field Pattern: Classic Angels Pattern
• On-Field Experience: Hot Rods Facebook fan David Matthews won 4 tickets and will participate in Wendy's Build-a-Burger Challenge
• Charity: Bellewood Presbyterian Home for Children
Nice touch. The team boasts "more than 7,000 tallies were cast" for the final element - the charity angle. Not to shabby for a page that close to 9,000 "Likes." Come to think of it, 9,000 Facebook fans is nothing to sneeze at for a Minor League Baseball team in Central Kentucky.

Kenny "The Jet" Smith Talks Draft, Free Agency and Worldwide Wes with Cadillac Mescallade

With the NBA Draft tipping off tonight in New York City, TNT NBA analyst and former NBA guard Kenny "the Jet" Smith was kind of enough to spend a few minutes with HHR. Kenny is in the news for a tongue-in-cheek petition to reinstate the two dollar bill to coincide with Taco Bell's $2 Meal Deals.

We all know what Charles Barkley has done for the "box that rocks" with Taco Bell. Kenny jokingly assured us he isn't following in Charles' footsteps, because if that were the case there might not be any $2 meals left.

We touched on a wide variety of NBA topics, and here's what Jet had to say.

On the chemistry of he and Charles Barkley Inside the NBA...
It just kind of naturally happens, it's like when you have friend, you have chemistry with him or you don't. It's nothing that we plan or plot, I think we are so enthusiastic about the game of basketball which leads to good conversation. Once you lead to good conversation it leads to good television.

On John Wall's best attribute or skillset...
I think he has alot of skill sets and I don't know if he has one that is best. His infectious way of playing, I think that is going to carry him a long way in the point guard position

Free agency, how much movement?
There's gonna be movement for sure, there are too many great players available and when you have that many loaded up with free agency I don't think your gonna have a consistent 7-8 guys staying at home and staying with the teams they play on, I think there will be 7-8 guys that might move over to somewhere, there will be about 7-8 players that will move.

As a New York guy, where is Lebron headed, possible to the Knicks?
(Laughs) I think Lebron James has been playing it close to the vest for the last two months and we are all waiting in the wings to figure it out. I don't think anyone has the upper hand or any team has a clear advantage.

If not Lebron, who is good for NY?
When you don't make the playoffs there is no one guy or two guys that you don't need. They're in a position of having a need in all areas.

His career in free agency, how did it compare to these days...
Well I think its a different era in terms of that. By the time I was a free agent I was in my fifth year, my decision was based solely on what players they had there, period. It had nothing to do with as much financially, everything was going to be about the same financially so it was all about the players that were there and would we have a chance to win an NBA championship and could I be a part of that puzzle.

Evolution of NBA Draft, any changes since his time (Smith was the 6th overall pick in 1987)?
The draft hasn't changed, it's still exciting stuff for players and family are involved, its an opportunity that people get to be a part of and its always exciting

Worldwide Wes, is he that well connected as articles and news pieces report?
Some of it's fact, some it's fiction. It's like the fish...how big is the fish you caught? There are a lot of guys in basketball, Wes included, that have been an integral part in helping guys guide their carers. He's no different form the rest. Lately the players he's been involved with have been better players. There are guys that are involved with 7th and 8th man on the team they just haven't been the best players. It's just a great cycle for him in terms of the guys he's involved with are very good players and now he's parlayed that into representing coaches.

William Wesley with LeBron James. (Paul Sancya/Associated Press)

Knicks back in playoffs?
It all depends on this summer, until we see what they have after July, then we'll know when they can make the playoffs or not.

Wheaties' Neck Just Got a Little Redder

Wheaties today unveiled a special-edition Dale Earnhardt commemorative box, "honoring his legendary career and celebrating his induction into the Hall of Fame."

An accompanying release notes:

Earnhardt’s record-tying seven championships, along with 76 wins and incredible fan popularity helped propel him into this latest “Breakfast of Champions” honor.

Earnhardt becomes the first stock car driver to be featured on the Wheaties box twice. He first appeared on a series of boxes in 1997 when he raced a Wheaties paint scheme in the All-Star event that same year. And, now Wheaties honors his competitive spirit and champion attitude in connection with his induction.

What jumps out at me more than anything is Earnhardt's image on the box.

At the risk of pissing off NASCAR nation (including HHR's own Rusty), the man known as "The Intimidator" looks as if the only thing he could intimidate is a bathroom stall. That said, it would not shock me if this become the most sought-after cereal box in the history of the Walmart.

Steve Nash is the Most Ridiculous Man in the World

Late last month we posted a piece on the BwB blog about Steve Nash's creativity once he finally embraced his stardom and inserted it into endorsement ventures.

His latest appearance for Vitamin Water pretty much sums up that entire post.

Blogs With Balls Radio, Episode 19

This week’s Blogs With Balls Show on the JoeSportsFan Radio Network is now available.

Download Episode 19 here, or subscribe via iTunes.

Today marks the triumphant return of the Ballsy Blog of the Week, which fittingly goes to the quartet of Chad Ochocinco, Chris Cooley, Ray Rice and Darnell Docket for their unprecedented news team coverage along with Jake & Amir during Super Bowl week. we highlight it for the fact that not only is the group (collectively known as the OCNN News Team) downright hilarious, but the project's sponsor - Motoblur - does an amazing job integrating their product into the viral videos in a manner that compliments, rather than takes away, from the videos' entertainment value.

I have seen the future. Take note, advertisers.

Staying in Miami, we bring on on-location guest Joe Fortenbaugh of National Football Post to talk Super Bowl, Pro Bowl, trade rumors, McNabb/Favre speculation and how the site and its unique staff have quickly become an inside source for pro football news, analysis and insight.

Prior to joining on with NFP full-time and focusing on fantasy football posts, Joe worked as an NFL agent at JB Sports for three years while earning his degree from Thomas Jefferson School of Law in San Diego.

Donovan McNabb Implores You to Drink the Kool-Aid

Or given the big "eff you" he threw at his teammates after yesterday's loss, it might as well be Haterade.

Having magnificently mangled another two minute drill, missed open receivers and played over-all unspectacularly in a game that cost them a #2 seed, Division Championship and first round playoff bye, the 34-year old moaned about the efforts of those damned kids:

"We showed our youth in situations where everyone began to look around to see who was going to make the play instead of stepping up and making that play. And that's something that comes with the territory when you have a young group."

This week’s Blogs With Balls Show on the JoeSportsFan Radio Network is now available.

Download Episode 11 Here.

We get a very interesting perspective on sports and media from author, producer, columnist, speaker and professor Dave Hollander. After going from music promotion to interviewing various legendary sports figures (whom we quiz him on in Skyped Up) and compiling the conversations in 52 Weeks: Interviews with Champions!, Hollander has been a columnist for AOL Sports, The Huffington Post, SI.com, New York Press, Interview and Penthouse (among others).

He is also an adjunct professor at the New York University Tisch Center for Sports Management, where he teaches a graduate course on Sports Management that "focuses on the marketing concepts and strategies involved in developing and implementing initiatives for sports and leisure products" with "emphasis is placed on positioning, programming sub-strategy, distribution, pricing strategies, regional sports networks, managing media, the Internet, building relevance for younger generations, and the unique nature of non-profit marketing."

It's a very candid conversation on what journalism as a whole has become and an uncensored look at online media from someone who has both practiced in the medium and teaches about its relationship to marketing.

Today we feature our good friend John Karalis' RedsArmy.com as the Ballsy Blog of the Week.

You may remember John as the star of our pre-BwB 1.0 Kobe spoof video:

Blogs With Balls from BLOGS WITH BALLS on Vimeo.

You should remember him for the fantastic work he puts out on RedsArmy.com.

Reds Army is continually evolving and bettering itself and has become a standard-bearer for team-oriented sites. In addition to posts, John and cohort Chuck "talk Celtics, the NBA, and whatever else come to mind" on Blog Talk Radio's The Two-Man Game, and John is 1/8 of the The 8th Seed Podcast.

This week we dig into a big issue always on the minds of sports bloggers - monetization.

We talk with Rich Gallagher, Senior Account Executive for Digital & Emerging Media at Taylor, a "sports, lifestyle and entertainment public relations firm" that has been very active in engaging sports blogs in promoting its clients.

One of those brands - Diageo Liquors (whose portfolio includes Guinness, Captain Morgan and Cuervo) was an early and energetic part of both or our Blogs With Balls events. We talk about what the brands are looking for in online partners, how they see the value in events like BwB, and we touch a little on the FTC's new online disclosure guidelines.

Rich shows just how forward-thinking some brands and firms can be in embracing online media.

Nets Get Ridiculous

The economy is hurting sports all over but the ticket package that the New Jersey Nets have just rolled out is ridiculous. Courtesy of my friend Jim, a lifelong Nets fan from the days of Ed O'Bannon and Chris Morris comes this reversible jersey package. For just $350 bucks you get tickets to 10 games, a subscription to the NY Post and 5 reversible NBA jerseys. These jerseys on one side are Nets players and on the other are some of the famous players that will be coming to play the Nets. So if things start going bad this season, just flip that Yi Jianlian jersey over and you can rock the Kevin Garnett. The big question, as Jim points out is who in their right mind is ever going to reverse their LeBron James jersey for a Jarvis Hayes uniform? Probably nobody. Don't look for the Lakers or Magic to be pulling this promotion anytime soon. I think they enjoy promoting just their own players enough.

Nike Golf's 8 > 9 Campaign Put to Test

Nike is bragging that its new SQ DYMO STR8-FIT and SQ DYMO² STR8-FIT drivers, with a choice of eight club head positions, will outperform all competition including, namely, the Taylor Made R9.

We decided to tap HHR's resident golf expert, DJ Virg, to put its claims to the test.

Nike SQ Dymo STR-8 –FIT vs. TaylorMade R9

Each club tested met the following specs:

Head Size: 460cc
Degree: 8.5◦
Shaft: Stiff

DJ Virg's Review

I was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to test out these 2 drivers. Both have the ability to change the lie and angle of the club head to adjust for certain shot types (e.g. draw, fade). Certainly this ability could benefit a golfer greatly, but with time restraints I decided to test these drivers out with a neutral head position. I am looking for a driver to add a little distance and cut down the severity of my missed shots. If I could find it in one of these drivers in the neutral head position, having the ability to change the position of the club head would definitely be a bonus.

Let me give you a little bit of my golfing background before I get to the results...

Years played: 13
Handicap: 6
Avg. Swing Speed (driver): 118 mph
Avg. Ball Speed (driver): 178 mph

The strength and weakness of my game is off the tee. I have a lot of distance but am not very accurate, and my missed shots are almost always un-findable. So in comparing these clubs I tested on 3 aspects of a golf shot: feel, distance and distance off center line.

Round One: Feel

The feel test consisted of hitting a dozen golf balls with each club. Have to say both clubs set up to the ball nice and had great overall look. The first swing with the Nike sounded like an explosion; the ball jumped of the clubface. The rest of the swings with the Nike felt very solid even a few missed shots off the heel and toe sounded and felt solid. The club was very forgiving. The Taylor made was also a very solid club, when the sweet spot was hit; however the miss hits felt awful. Miss hits were a lot less forgiving.

Winner: Nike SQ Dymo STR-8 - FIT

Round Two and Three: Distance and Off Center Line

Distance test was done using a virtual driving range at Golf Galaxy in Langhorne, PA. The machine calculates many statistics such as distance, ball flight, spin rate, launch angle and distance off center line. To complete the test I hit 5 drives with each club. Here are the numbers:

The numbers show that on average the Nike driver was about 17 yards longer and about 20 yards closer to the center line. The off center line numbers for the TaylorMade are very consistent with my typical tee shots, long and off the radar. For the Nike driver, my off center line numbers were by no means perfect, but showed a big difference from the TaylorMade and also my current driver. The Nike might not help me hit every fairway, but I will definitely be in play. Additionally the Nike had a much lower spin rate which in turn means greater distance.

Winner: Nike SQ Dymo STR-8 - FIT

Overall
The Nike SQ Dymo Str-8 FIT out-performed the TaylorMade R9. The Nike gave me more distance, accuracy and was lot more forgiving on missed shot.
