Actor Mounts Campaign to Be Cast as Magic

After retweeting a press release announcing the casting of Tug Coker as Larry Bird and noting my interest in the coming-soon-to-Broadway Magic Bird, I was hit up with a Tweet from actor Leonard Dozier who (with a release of his own) is vying to play Bird's rival opposite Coker.

From the release...

Thus, miscasting either of these icons, even with the right names, can be catastrophic for the production.

On the other hand, casting a Magic that looks, sounds and acts like him maybe critical to this production with Bird already cast. Leonard Dozier, a 6'4 actor and former basketball player, would be quite convincing as Magic. While his name wouldn't have theatergoers rushing to the box-office, the word of mouth about his performance would. Besides, those not interested in sports or Magic and Bird aren't going regardless.
Judge for yourself with Dozier's sizzle real which includes his best Magic impression, a little singing and, of course, baby sky hooks.

Rashard Lewis Handles Himself Well Among Inebriated Fans

Here's some footage we had from Orlando before Rashard Lewis got shipped up to DC.

Lady: "Who's a better defender? Rondooooo...or ahh...who like who you like to play worst against?"

Lewis: "Rondo? Ron Artest is a better defender than Rondo."

Lady: "Yeah but who who hurts you the most?"

Lewis: "Who hurts me? Nobody."

Lady: "Like nah I mean..." [left jab, left jab]

Lewis: "Jesus! He's the only one!"

She recovers nicely and reflects back to Larry Bird and "that kid" from Detroit Bill Laimbeer.

CBS Sports Fooled by College Message Board Trolls

An article by TJ Corbs Corbs, which a source in-the-know tells us is a fictitious and satirical author on Bleacher Report (a content partner with CBS), was featured On the main page of the CBSSports.com college basketball page.

The article essentially was about how Seton Hall should be kicked out of the Big East. Granted, it is positioned as editorial, but the fact of the matter is that the piece was written as a ruse...for no other reason than to incite Seton Hall fans.

Evidence of this can be seen by simply looking at the VU Rivals message board.

Clearly, Wildcat fans are in on the joke. Comments include:
  • TJ Corbin is a compelling journalist. His career began 2 days ago and already he is an internet sensation.
  • Buzz Bissinger's head would explode if he knew about these journalistic shenanigans.
  • Remind me never to go to cbssports for sports news.
  • Can someone post this link on PirateScrew?
  • Finally broken through. This is an unbelievable development - one that we will look back on in ten years as a major accomplishment.
  • Thats unbelievable. CBS sports is a joke.
  • it's official - reliable, credible journalism is dead - long live the internet where fans can author articles made from whole cloth for no reason other than to tweak fans of rival teams
  • please make Providence your next victim - a buddy of mine went there and it would make my year

Waiting for Godunk: More on the D-League

Kevin Owens has been playing professional basketball for the past six years and decided to start a blog documenting his daily life. He started contributing some of those stories here at HHR, and now is being featured at SLAM Online.

---------

I received a lot of positive feedback about my last D-League article that I wrote for SLAM online, so I figured I would channel my inner Rick Reilly and follow up with a few things, I feel, that the D-League represented to me.

The D-League is long bus rides and connecting flights. It’s six consecutive games against the same team. The D-League is Thanksgiving Dinner at your head coach’s home or Christmas Dinner at a gas station in North Carolina.

The D-League is practice after an elementary school gym class and before a P.T.A. meeting. It’s driving a half hour to practice because your “usual” gym is being used for an 8th grade dance. It’s a membership to the local YMCA and waiting till the 43 year old periodontist finishes with the 40 pound weights so you can finish your set.

The D-League is staying for an hour and a half to sign autographs after our only sold out game of the season, “Sponge Bob Square Pants” night. It’s die hard loyal fans in empty arenas. It’s a game at 8pm one day and noon the next.

The D-League is country music and rodeos. It’s cold arenas and early morning shoot arounds. It’s generic mascots and pregnant cheerleaders. The D-League is Buffalo Wild Wings, Piggly Wiggly and Kroger. It’s being asked to dinner by a group of fans, and graciously accepting.

The D-League is 2am trips to Waffle House and waitresses named Joan. It’s finding constructive uses for your down time. It’s Wednesday matinees and marathon Playstation sessions. It’s par 3 golf courses and loitering at the mall.

The D-League is culturally different roommates and vicious dogs. It’s 500 card rummy and Dairy Queen. It’s toilet blue cell phones and trash bags on the bus.

The D-League is trying to get to the next level. It’s pushing yourself day in and day out. It’s playing over hyped college players and realizing you are better than them.

The D-League is not cars with suicide doors or 32 room mansions. It’s not expensive watches or 80 gallon fish tanks. It’s not fast cars and faster women…It’s working hard enough to get all these things.

The D-League is playing through pain and floor burns. It’s diving into the stands for a loose ball and bags of ice. The D-League is attending “optional shoot arounds” and staying late after practice. It’s finding something you do well, and perfecting it. It’s hustle, hard work and dedication.

The D-League is not the NBA, it’s everything the NBA should be.

Last month, we kicked off an ambitious video project with Yardbarker and Wondershot Productions that’s taken us to 5 different cities to spend time with 5 NBA players, as part of myTown presented by T-Mobile myTouch 3G.

We just finished up the project by heading to Orlando to spend the day with the Magic's Rashard Lewis.

ESPN Can't Confirm Their Own Story Involving Self

I saw this on the scroll this morning that "Chris Broussard has learned through independent sources." So hit the Internets to dig deeper.

It confirmed my hypothesis as to just how stupid this reporting is. Actually, that's not a hypothesis. Just an observation.

LeBron James is planning to announce the team with which he will sign during a one-hour special on ESPN Thursday night, ESPN The Magazine's Chris Broussard has learned through independent sources.

ESPN would only confirm that active discussions for the special are ongoing. But sources tell Broussard that representatives for James contacted the network, proposing that James makes his announcement during a 9 p.m. ET special.

Kenny "The Jet" Smith Talks Draft, Free Agency and Worldwide Wes with Cadillac Mescallade

With the NBA Draft tipping off tonight in New York City, TNT NBA analyst and former NBA guard Kenny "the Jet" Smith was kind of enough to spend a few minutes with HHR. Kenny is in the news for a tongue-in-cheek petition to reinstate the two dollar bill to coincide with Taco Bell's $2 Meal Deals.

We all know what Charles Barkley has done for the "box that rocks" with Taco Bell. Kenny jokingly assured us he isn't following in Charles' footsteps, because if that were the case there might not be any $2 meals left.

We touched on a wide variety of NBA topics, and here's what Jet had to say.

On the chemistry of he and Charles Barkley Inside the NBA...
It just kind of naturally happens, it's like when you have friend, you have chemistry with him or you don't. It's nothing that we plan or plot, I think we are so enthusiastic about the game of basketball which leads to good conversation. Once you lead to good conversation it leads to good television.

On John Wall's best attribute or skillset...
I think he has alot of skill sets and I don't know if he has one that is best. His infectious way of playing, I think that is going to carry him a long way in the point guard position

Free agency, how much movement?
There's gonna be movement for sure, there are too many great players available and when you have that many loaded up with free agency I don't think your gonna have a consistent 7-8 guys staying at home and staying with the teams they play on, I think there will be 7-8 guys that might move over to somewhere, there will be about 7-8 players that will move.

As a New York guy, where is Lebron headed, possible to the Knicks?
(Laughs) I think Lebron James has been playing it close to the vest for the last two months and we are all waiting in the wings to figure it out. I don't think anyone has the upper hand or any team has a clear advantage.

If not Lebron, who is good for NY?
When you don't make the playoffs there is no one guy or two guys that you don't need. They're in a position of having a need in all areas.

His career in free agency, how did it compare to these days...
Well I think its a different era in terms of that. By the time I was a free agent I was in my fifth year, my decision was based solely on what players they had there, period. It had nothing to do with as much financially, everything was going to be about the same financially so it was all about the players that were there and would we have a chance to win an NBA championship and could I be a part of that puzzle.

Evolution of NBA Draft, any changes since his time (Smith was the 6th overall pick in 1987)?
The draft hasn't changed, it's still exciting stuff for players and family are involved, its an opportunity that people get to be a part of and its always exciting

Worldwide Wes, is he that well connected as articles and news pieces report?
Some of it's fact, some it's fiction. It's like the fish...how big is the fish you caught? There are a lot of guys in basketball, Wes included, that have been an integral part in helping guys guide their carers. He's no different form the rest. Lately the players he's been involved with have been better players. There are guys that are involved with 7th and 8th man on the team they just haven't been the best players. It's just a great cycle for him in terms of the guys he's involved with are very good players and now he's parlayed that into representing coaches.

William Wesley with LeBron James. (Paul Sancya/Associated Press)

Knicks back in playoffs?
It all depends on this summer, until we see what they have after July, then we'll know when they can make the playoffs or not.

I Gotta Have More Pino!

This man puts his pants on one leg at a time. But when he puts on his pants, he makes champions!

A few days ago, we posted our video from our first myTown shoot we did with Yardbarker and Wondershot. We asked Red's Army's John Karalis to join us that day and make a fun little cameo (which he does around the :40 mark of the vid).

We hadn't realized he was shooting some vid of his own, featuring our favorite restaurant owner...

Audio Interview with Brian Scalbrine on Playoffs Advantage, City, Fans and Radio Career

HHR with Brian Scalabrine on Newbury Street in Boston.

Last month we had chance to catch up with Celtics big man Brian Scalabrine in Boston as part of myTown presented by T-Mobile myTouch 3G - a project we are doing with Yardbarker and Wondershot Productions that we've rolled out at BwB today.

Interestingly enough, with the C's close to crushing the hopes and dream of the city of Cleveland, Scal predicted Boston's potential playoff advantage over the rest of the field:

"I believe this team is super built for the playoffs…We might not have the best player like LeBron James or Kobe Bryant, but we have the most talent top-to-bottom and that’s what you need – you need players to make plays in the playoffs...

"The team that’s gonna win – 2 teams equal talent is the team that’s going to make less mistakes than the next team. You’ve got to be able to execute game plans. Veteran teams can do that."
You can listen to the interview here:

Terry DeHere's Political Career Ends Quicker Than His NBA One

Terry DeHere finished his college career as Seton Hall's all-time leading scorer, second team All-American, the 1993 Big East Player of the Year, and was selected 13th overall in the NBA draft that year.

By 1999, he was out of the Association. He returned to Jersey City, where he once played for legendary Bob Hurley at St. Anthony's HS, and became entrenched in the community as a restaurant owner and philanthropist.

With star power and local ties, politics seemed a likely path.

After an unsuccessful bid for a council seat in 2001, DeHere won a seat on the city's board of elections in 2007.

Last night, quicker than his NBA career ended, DeHere got trounced in his re-election bid.

Crushed.
Sterling Waterman - 6,946 votes
*Angel Valentin - 6,453 votes
Carol Lester - 3,848 votes
Sebastian D'Amico - 3,391 votes
*L. Terry Dehere - 2,199 votes
*Gerald McCann - 2,199 votes

(* = incumbent)
DeHere ran on a slate with Gerald McCann, the city's former mayor, that was opposed by the local teacher's union after they (McCann & DeHere) "voted against a teachers contract that called for roughly 4 percent raises for the next four years."

With the state's new governor going head-on with the teachers unions as a whole (namely due to his plea to them to implement a salary freeze for one year), "voters rejected school budgets in about half of the state's school districts, a dramatic drop from the 74% that were passed in 2009." Jersey City seems to be an exception to the rule, and DeHere ended up paying the price for trying to be fiscally sound at the expense of an apparently electorally influential group.
