MiLB Team Hosts Facebook Fans Night

In a world where wacky Minor League Baseball promotional shenanigans are all the norm, the Bowling Green Hot Rods tapped into another common societal element for their latest game-day marketing scheme - Facebook.
For more than two months, fans cast votes on a variety of elements they will see and experience on May 18. The winning elements are:

• Game Time: 6:35 PM (Gates open at 5:30 PM)
• Hot Rods Jersey Color: Red
• Food Special: $1 Nachos
• Merchandise Special: 20% off Adult Apparel
• Theme: '80's Night featuring music and video clips from the awesome '80's
• Field Pattern: Classic Angels Pattern
• On-Field Experience: Hot Rods Facebook fan David Matthews won 4 tickets and will participate in Wendy's Build-a-Burger Challenge
• Charity: Bellewood Presbyterian Home for Children
Nice touch. The team boasts "more than 7,000 tallies were cast" for the final element - the charity angle. Not to shabby for a page that close to 9,000 "Likes." Come to think of it, 9,000 Facebook fans is nothing to sneeze at for a Minor League Baseball team in Central Kentucky.

Ocho Vies for Sexiest Man in Social Media

While it's easy to poke fun at a professional football player who has to compete and defend his sexiness against a fictional pitchman and an orange DJ, I almost feel worse for legitimate actors who have to vie against someone who is so attention starved that he voluntarily re-named himself after a fictitious version of the number "85."

Oh and then there's Vin Diesel.

And, of course, it's all fun and games until TO gets wind of this and throws a temper tantrum.

Doctor Freddie Mitchell Invites You to Join His Ponzi Scheme

The unfortunate, yet inevitable, has happened. My once favorite player has stooped to a new low - soliciting friends on Facebook to be a part of his wonderful new business opportunity.

A few days ago, I had the following message on my homepage:

Just click the product's website. Look at the "Opportunity" tab, followed by "Process" and "Compensation."

Drink Bazi Juice! Swindle Friends! Get Rich! Cry!

Bernie Madoff he is not. Nor is he even JD Drew.

Jay Cutler to Give Disgruntled Brian Dawkins Free Tickets

Brian Dawkins signed with Broncos thinking the team was making a concerted effort to compete. His addition sured up a lackluster defense that would compliment a young, explosive offense. A few weeks later and they've traded their franchise quarterback and are preparing for a mini-camp QB battle between....wait for it....Kyle Orton and Chris Simms. Not exactly what the future HOFer signed on for in his last few seasons.

He is pissed. So he took his complaint to where any disgruntled employee would...Facebook.

A Facebook Cause the Sports Blogosphere Can Really Get Behind

I usually ignore every Mob War request, passed drink and cause invitation that comes my way on Facebook.

But sometimes I put my distaste for the relentless solicitation practices of my "friends" on the social network aside in favor of doing what's morally right.

So when this popped into my "Requests" bucket, I had to give it a second look:

Category:
International - Service and Other
Description:
Challenging Paradigms: Vertical Ballet As Olympic Sport

par·a·digm (pār'ə-dīm', -dĭm') n. A set of assumptions, concepts, values, and practices that constitutes a way of viewing reality for the community that shares them.

Vertical Ballet just sounds like it should be an Olympic sport, doesn't it? Afterall, "vertical" implies gravity defiance with a dangerous suspenseful element, and "ballet" represents that strikingly beautiful blended art form which is the epitome of athleticism and grace.

Well, what about Pole Dancing? Funny how we as humans are often blind to things which challenge our preconceived notions. We are predisposed to see things we believe to be true based on a "remembered past " -- however, we know that perception (visual, psychological, intellectual) is a matter of interpretation, NOT fact.

Like the horizontal bar, the vertical bar should have a place in international competitive sport. Yes, we are referring to Pole Dance/Pole Fitness. Like Rhythmic Gymnastics, the Horizontal Bar and Figure Skating, Pole Dance/Pole Fitness is acrobatic, technical and takes disciplined physical skill and strength to master. Over 50 countries world wide take part in lessons, workshops, conventions, competitions and teacher training. Petition signatures are currently being gathered to present to the International Olympic Committee to recognize our sport.

Did you know that other recognized sports include:
Billiard Sports
Bowling
Bridge
Chess
Cricket
Golf
Korfball
Life Saving
Motorcycle Racing
Mountaineering and Climbing
Netball
Orienteering
Powerboating
Racquetball
Roller Skating
Surfing
Sumo
Tug of War
Underwater Sports
Water Skiing
Wushu

Join us in shattering old paradigms. Allow us to define and celebrate our sport for the athletic, graceful art it is:
