Jared Talks Subway, Celebrity, NYC Marathon and Training with "Famous Fans"

Today, I got a chance to talk with ING NYC Marathon participant and Subway icon Jared Fogel.

Jared talks about his decade+ role as the face of the restaurant and the celebrity it's brought him. We also discuss his Marathon training and that process, including tips he's received from a handful of other "Famous Fans" including Ryan Howard, Blake Griffin, Michael Phelps and last year's Marathon winner Meb Keflezighi.

On Howard: "So laid back. He deals with the pressure so well...geuninely a nice guy."

Griffin: "He stretches a lot now...He really wants to make sure he avoids injury."

Phelps: "...the number of hours he has to put into his training on an every day basis...8-10 hours in of swimming...He's really had to make huge sacrifices with his personal life."

Meb: "Very, very humble...What a great generous guy."

Jared relays some great advice for runners that Keflezighi gave him on enjoying the sport as well as this particular event.

Subway is a signature sponsor and "The Official Training Restaurant of the ING New York City Marathon."

Jared is running to support the Jared Foundation, the organization he founded in 2005 to eliminate childhood obesity.

Bob Smizik is a Crotchety Old Pittsburgherbit

Since Ryan Howard signed his record-breaking extension, the former Rookie of the Year-MVP-WFC has drawn national criticism as a one-dimensional, over-hyped, over-paid ballplayer. No one has sounded that siren louder than Post Gazette's Bob Smizik, who does so by pointing out the criticisms of fellow scribes rather than manning up and giving us his own in-depth opinion. But, the latent Howard hatred is there. The amazing thing is that the Post Gazette pays this guy to post other papers' columns. The only thing lazier than said columns would be for a blogger to accuse the bigoted Smizik of racism because Howard is African-American. Some of us just choose to take the higher road.

Softball Player Pulls Aaron Rowand

Except she doesn't break her nose and fails to make the catch. Matter of fact, it seems she was nowhere even close to making a play on the ball.

National Fast Pitch's "Shanel Scott tries to make the catch. Just obliterates the wall."

Meanwhile, the announcer describes Team USA slugger Crystal Bustos (who hit the bomb) as though she was Ryan Howard: "What is so impressive about Crystal Bustos is the pitch prior she is completely fooled on an off-speed. She almost spins herself around. Then she takes the next pitch and just drives it out of the ballpark."

What Was the Most Amazing Part About Last Night's Phillies-Sox Game?

A. That Bartolo Colon might still have a posse after getting lit up so badly.

B. That Howard and Burrell each tripled in the same game (as The Fightins' Meech points out "Howard has a stolen base and a triple in back-to-back games. Davey Lopes must be doing something right").

C. That this lady hasn't learned her lesson to listen to her husband.

Separated at Birth: Uncle Ryan

Our buddy Meech at Bugs & Cranks reposted this picture of Ryan Howard entertaining some Washington Wizards dancers from The Big Lead.

Okay, turn you head on more of a slant... Now, make a fist. Slowly ease it up underneath your chin. This is looking really good. Kay, hold still right there. Now, just imagine you're weightless, in the middle of the ocean, surrounded by tiny little seahorses. That was the one. I think that's gonna come out really nice.
