NYG Steve Smith on Lockout, USC, Steve Smiths & Tofu

It's not everyday you have the opportunity to share tofu culinary creations with a Super Bowl-winning Pro-Bowl wide receiver in the backyard of the greatest city on earth. Actually, we'd venture to say this sort of thing only comes about once in a lifetime.

So when we saw that New York Giant Steve Smith was serving as brand ambassador for House Foods Super Firm Tofu, we sent our North Jersey correspondents Eddie and Mike to mingle with Smith and sample various dishes featuring the stuff at (of all places) an esteemed steakhouse, River Palm Terrace Restaurant in Edgewater, NJ.

Who knows. These two manly 30 nothings may have just found themselves a new healthy summer barbecue alternative.

Thanks to our friends at Garden State on a Plate for the hookup.

--------------

House Foods put together a dinner to introduce their new line of "super firm tofu" endorsed by Steve Smith of the New York football Giants. Having never eaten anything with tofu before, I was a little hesitant at first but was assured by those around me that there was nothing to be afraid of. I mean, who even knew that tofu came in different levels of firmness? Maybe I'm just not all that worldly. In any event, we gathered in a private room at the River Palm Terrace in Edgewater, NJ. Smith said a few words and the meal was served. Everything except the main course included tofu in some form.
  • Appetizers: Tomato and tofu skewers, Maryland crab and tofu cakes, chopped salad featuring tofu cubes
  • Main Course: Choice between Jumbo Shrimp, King salmon, Grilled rib-eye, Filet mignon
  • Desert: Tofu Cheesecake

As I said, I am NOT a tofu eater, but there wasn't anything on the menu that I would not order again. Everything was excellent, which I think is as much a testament to the people at the River Palm as to House Foods' great product.

Expanding my food options aside, the biggest things I learned tonight were: A. Smith is a very laid back guy, very approachable. He even seem a little nervous in talking to me (I think I intimidated him); B. He absolutely loves tofu. It sounds a little odd, but this is not a product he blindly endorses. In fact, as he notes in the video below, he approached them for the endorsement.

Thanks to Eddie Z. for the write up and video and to Mike McLaughlin for the images.

This is Considered a "Throwback Jersey" in Beijing

On Saturday, we went to Lincoln. Yesterday, Lincoln came to us.

At my local Chinese takeout joint in lovely Central New Jersey, I learned that the Chinese are big retro Cornhusker fans, as their proudly displayed 2009 calendar boasts a young Asian lass (lad?) sporting a 1994/1995 Nebraska back-to-back national championship sweatshirt/turtleneck/tank top.

What Would Brian Boitano Make?

What's Brian Boitano going to do on the Food Network? I bet he'll kick an ass or two.

Actually, no. He won't do that.

"What Would Brian Boitano Make?" - a not-so-subtle take on the South park parody song - debuted on the Food Network recently. At first I thought this could not possibly be real. I was mistaken.

I think Slashfood.com had the most dead-on description:

No, this is one of those "lifestyle" shows the Food Network is so adept at churning out -- more tailored to the host's persona and his or her niche than anything else. And to judge by the first episode, Brian's self-professed niche would be San Franciscan guys who like to entertain their single girlfriends, prepare fussy little crudités and "ride bikes on rainbows!"
The show airs Sundays at 1pm/12c.

The Thurmanator

You thought we had heard the last of ex-Buffalo Bill and Hall of Fame running back Thurman Thomas? Not so. Courtesy of the folks at Thisiswhyyourefat.com comes this amazing sandwich of the same name. "What does the Thurmanator contain?" you ask.

Two 3/4 pound beef patties under a half a pound of ham, covered in mozzarella, American cheese, lettuce, tomato, mushrooms, sauteed onions, pickles, jalapeno peppers and mayo.

Sounds like you'll be huddling in the bathroom for all four quarters after this one.

Also if you have a free hour, cruise the rest of this website as some of the concoctions are amazing.

FanFoodie.com: Philippe's Los Angeles - An Eatery & An Institution

Philippe’s, an institution in downtown Los Angeles, is known not only for its french dip au jus sandwiches but the atomic hot mustard accessory that is "eat at your own risk."

Located on the backside of downtown in a building that was originally a machine shop on the bottom and an Inn on top, it is the go-to place before Dodger, Laker and Clipper games. They serve beer and wine at a price worth going out of your way for to get your grub and chug on before you tackle the expensive concession stands at game-time.

In BBQ Sauce Rage, Rusty Propositions Dale Jr.

Regardless of what's on MTV, Junior probably prefers the superior barbecue of his own state to the tomato mess of Memphis. Rusty (on behalf of HHR) is proud to offer Junior an unlimited supply of homemade North Carolina style barbecue in exchange for a weekly NASCAR insider's column on this beloved sports blog.

It wouldn't have to be much . . . just a few short paragraphs about life as the world's most popular racecar driver. We could call it, June Bug's Garage Talk or some other silly play on words. The English language dictionary can be your oyster, my friend.

You just give us a call, Junior, and we are here to serve. Rusty is more than willing to turn his kitchen into your own personal barbecue factory. And as some members of the HHR staff will tell you, Rusty's barbecue is like a circus of awesomeness in your mouth.

Just let us know, buddy.

Yours truly,
Rusty

Give Thanks, Get in the Booth

When toying around with our Thanksgiving-related post this year, we pondered the question...

"Is there a sports equivalent of the Americans giving the Indians blankets covered in smallpox?"

The only thing that came to mind is the Eagles sending TO to Dallas.

Then again, there are some things as embedded in the American lifestyle as Turkey Day.

Among them are football and television.

Per tradition, you'll watch the 0-11 Lions in their quest for inverse perfection (unless, God forbid, you're in Detroit). Or maybe you'll watch McNabb try to keep his holiday meal down. While you do, think about this post as you listen to the cunning linguists who narrate and comment upon the "epic" battles on Thursday and throughout the weekend.

Turkey

John Madden has become the industry standard. Some people by now are sick of this meat but in the end you had to admit it's not thanksgiving with out it.

Turducken

Joe Buck. Because when he talks it feels like someone is trying to jam things inside me that don't belong there.

Gravy

Gus Johnson makes everything better and can jazz up even the biggest pile of shit on your plate.

Stuffing

Emmitt Smith. Just throw a heap of gizzards and bread together and hope - pray - something good comes of it. Luckily, like Emmitt, you really can't go wrong. Even when he's bad (always), he's oh so rewarding. Plus, you'd just like to shove him up a turkey's ass. Madden won't mind.

Cranberry Sauce

Michelle Tafoya. Sweet, sassy and jiggles in the can.

Hard Cider

Frank Caliendo. It's not something you'd choose to drink normally, but at least one day out of the year you hope it gets the job done as you try to drown out your bantering family.

Sweet Potatoes (with marshmallows)

Cris Collinsworth. Tasty, hits the spot, and is too often surrounded, covered up, or drowned out by ex-players who offer nothing but fluff.

Fancy Table Ornament

Jimmy Johnson. Most brilliant thing at the table, but in the end gets put to the side.

The Last Piece of Pumpkin Pie

Brent Musberger. Some people cannot stand him (or the pie), and some people say College FB doesn't exist without him. As the women head to the stores for black Friday and super savings Saturday, we are stuck at home, molded into our couch listening to Musberger, much as we reluctantly reach for a second piece of pie as the table clearing and clean-up begins on Thurdsay afternoon.

And who's preparing this feast?

Mom who drinks way too much Chardonnay while cooking/eating

Danyelle Sargent. Has uncanny ability to resurrect things everyone believed to be dead and buried.

Get Your Eats On

Last week, HHR launched an offshoot site geared towards hungry travelers and sports enthusiasts. Locally-based bloggers give their recommendations on what and where to eat in sports cities across the country. Note: we aren't talking tourist traps and chain restaurants, but rather, damn good local staples.

Check out FanFoodie.com.
