Life Without Football #2: Sports Talk Radio

Sure, it doesn't have a former child star making fun of Rex Ryan, but still a great effort from our friends at Grey Pop with their second installment of "Life Without Football."

Be Nice. Vote for Greg

The local FM sports radio station is looking for a new voice and we think our buddy Greg Nice should be that man. If they can emply Mike Missanelli and Darren Daulton, they can certainly give Greg a shot. Afterall, he DOES have the voice of God...such golden pipes.

Go give him a thumbs up on YouTube.

Blogs With Balls Radio, Episode 25

This week’s Blogs With Balls Show on the JoeSportsFan Radio Network is now available.

Download Episode 25 here, or subscribe via iTunes.

We kick the show off this week with a very pointed voicemail we received from the incomparable Softball Guy, who was not all that thrilled with our guest selection this week: Matt Sebek from our podcasting partners JoeSportsFan.com.

An Exclusive, Emotional Interview with Softball Guy from JoeSportsFan.com on Vimeo.

Long before partnering up on the Internets waves, JoeSportsFan was a everyday read for HHR.

Matt's experience as an online programmer has helped take the site's brand to a new level of online media that includes blogging, and the incorporation of both audio and video.

About a month ago, JSF launched JoeSportsFanSTL.com which focuses on sports in the site's home town of St. Louis, and puts out a weekly Basketball Jones-esq video segment covering the latest hot topics surrounding the city's teams and athletes in the offbeat tone JSF fans have come to know and love.

Ep. 3: The One with Derrick Chievous from JoeSportsFan.com on Vimeo.

The city-centric, or "hyper-local," approach to online sports coverage is one we have been keeping a close eye on leading up to BwB3 in light of national companies like ESPN and Comcast, and regional ones like NESN and SNY going full force into blogging and multimedia/online platforms. We talk about how this could affect team and city-based sites, including the new JSF STL.

The guys that run the site have also dabbled in AM radio, and Matt talks about the advantages to working online as opposed to the terrestrial waves.

For any aspiring podcasters, and those bloggers looking to attempt video, this week is a must listen, as Matt let's you know from his experience what steps you can take to make your show(s) better and differentiate them from the field that is rapidly saturating.

Rep. Calls out Goodell on Limbaugh Hypocrisy, Blasts "Offensive" Dolphins Owners Fergie & JLo

Transcript from Rep. Steve King (R-IA) during yesterday's House Judiciary Committee hearing on Capitol Hill:

"Your position on owners have the right image, and I would direct it to your statement on the 13th of October where you said, 'I think it's divisive comments, or they are not what the NFL is all about. I would not want to see those kinds of comments from people who are in responsible positions within the NFL, no, absolutely not.' Now, I take you as a man of your word. But I would point out that you have a couple of owners that have performed lyrics in songs that are far more offensive. In fact, I don't think anything that Rush Limbaugh said was offensive, but with Fergie and with J. Lo, they have, between the two of them, alleged that the CIA are terrorists and liars, they've promoted sexual abuse of women, they've used the N-word, verbal pornography, recreational drug use, et cetera, and they are owners of the Dolphins.

And it is also ironic that Fergie was approved as an owner on the very day that you made your statement against Rush Limbaugh. And I would point out for the committee, the statement that Rush Limbaugh made is this -- that seems to be the one that survives the criticism, and that is: "I think what we've had here is a little social concern in the NFL. The media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well. They're interested in black coaches and black quarterbacks doing well. McNabb got a lot of credit for the performance of the team that he really didn't deserve," close quote."

Limbaugh's reaction: "Of course, Goodell's a total weasel. He had no answer about the Dolphins' owners so wouldn't even address the question, and he got on his high horse about how McNabb is a fine player and a fine person and it has nothing to do with the color of his skin, when I (a) never said he was not a fine person; (b) never said he was a bad QB -- just that he was overrated (which no one should deny); and (c) said the MEDIA was obsessed with the color of his skin (which is also undeniable), not that I was."

Bearcats Radio Station Takes Shots at TOSU

These are radio lead-ins for Univ. of Cincinnati football on Cincy’s main AM station, WLW 700. They are taking major shots at Ohio State with these – it’s beautiful!

Plus, gotta love the fact that they’ve got the OSU fight song playing in the background. Whoever produced these lead-ins might get murdered. Seriously.

Listen to ten of the promos here.

Blogs With Balls Radio, Episode 4

This week’s Blogs With Balls Show on the JoeSportsFan Radio Network is now available.

Download Episode 4 Here.

This week we have a big announcement (that we can't really announce). But the important detail we can share is that later this week, we will announce that a very prominent partner has come on board who will sponsor registration for a limited time that will result in $100 tickets for Blogs With Balls-only attendees at Blog World Expo. This price will not only include the formal program, but also an invite-only party sponsored by the partner, as well as the rest of the goodies/watch parties/fun-and-games we have lined up for our sports-bloggin' brethren. Plus, you know, it's Vegas.

Our Blog With Balls of the Week is "Going Pro" - a triathlon blog. Didn't know they existed did you? An interesting pick indeed, but Chris justifies its nomination well - not only does the author have a unique audience, but he's a damn good writer. These two things, if focused properly, could position the site favorably in an under-served market.

Our guest this week is the incomparable Gary Vaynerchuk. Before the event, Gary was considered by many a somewhat odd choice as our featured speaker at Blogs With Balls 1.0, but gave the audience a talk they'll remember and certainly should have learned from. VaynerMedia, a social media firm he and his brother AJ started and run, represents BwB2.0 featured speaker Jalen Rose, among other sports figures and entities. His first book, as part of a 7-figure deal he signed with Harper Studio is due out in October and is currently available for presale.

Of course, no guest appearance would be complete without challenging them to a game of “Skyped Up.” We mix two of Gary's favorite things - wine and sports.

Blogs With Balls Radio, Episode 2

This week's Blogs With Balls Show on the JoeSportsFan Radio Network is now available.

We want to thank everyone for the great feedback we got on Episode 1 and hope you continue to listen and offer comments and suggestions.

Download Episode 2 Here.

Today we tease our flubbed conversation with John McEnroe. Don't worry - we will salvage it.

He spoke with us about a number of things including his guitar playing, Wilmbledon dream matches, the future of the sport and more. But mainly he was on to promote prostate cancer awareness as an ambassador for "Stand Up 2 Cancer."

Please visit ProstateCancerWatch.com and check back in soon for audio and transcripts of our conversation.

Admittedly we ramble on for a bit in the begining, but an early point we are trying to make is that crediblity is among the most important qualities to have online. We hope the reason we were able to bring so many top online sports influencers together for both BwB 1 & 2 is due to the fact that we have taken the time to build and cultivate relationships, are genuinely sincere and honest, and have created a track record.

As such, we tried to make this a recurring theme appears throughout the program.

We had a ton of fun talking about this week's Ballsy Blog of the Week - our good friends at WhoDeyRevolution.com.

There latest task in "Project Mayhem" could very well have resulted in the first time in the history of the NFL that an owner of a team ordered the grounding of an airplane.

As WDR notes, the shenanigans were picked up by ESPN (via the AP) and Pro Football Talk:

ESPN.com is running the AP story on their website about last night's scrimmage, and the piece includes this great nugget:

"An estimated 6,500 fans showed up for the annual scrimmage. Soon after it started, a small plane flew overhead towing a banner that read: "101-187-1 ... HIRE A GM!" That's the Bengals' record since 1991, when Mike Brown took control of the team after his father's death.

Brown functions as the team's de facto general manager. He was sitting on a patio next to the press box, watching the scrimmage, when the banner flew overhead. The Bengals have had only one winning season during Brown's 18 years of running the team."

Also, ProFootballTalk gave Project Mayhem Task #9 a mention in their AFC North One-Liners.

Our guest this week is author, entrepreneur and former college standout/Arena League player Lewis Howes.

Howes literally wrote the book on online networking(LinkedWorking) and has used its techniques to establish an unmatched network of sports executives across the country.

Lewis talks about the importance of building relationships, trust and a brand identity online and offline.

Of course, we couldn't let him go without testing his familiarity with "relationship experts" on this week's "Skyped Up" segment.

Thursday Afternoons in Houston

I'll be taking over for Adam from Yardbarker in doing a quick, weekly Thursday afternoon drop-by with 1560 The Game's David Nuno to talk about what's hot in the sports blogosphere.

Today was my first go-around (and more of an intro). I wasn't too terrible.

Pleasure for Him: Former WWF Champ Pisses Himself Unknowingly on O&A

When you're in the camel clutch, it's suffice to say his piss pant area is right in the back of the oponent's head. Just sayin'.

From WWTDD:

But O & A are still on XM and Sirius, and yesterday they had on the easily relaxed Iron Shiek, who pissed his pants without knowing it during the show, thankfully on a non-fabric couch.

Doc Gooden Has "(Uh) At Least Six Kids"

Dwight Gooden, by all accounts, has turned his life around after having a career derailed by off-field transgressions.

This morning on WFAN's Boomer and Carton show, he talked frankly about his career, his drug use and even his endorsement of a certain little, blue performance enhancer.

As he is frequent to do with big name guests, Craig Carton invited Doc over for a little July 4th BBQ/pool party. To which Gooden noted he'd be happy to come but would have to bring "the rest of my kids. I have (uh) at least six kids and one grandkid."

Mike Quick Keeps It Real About Birds...on NY Radio

It's about time someone with Eagles ties said what needed to be said. Conveniently, he did so 80 miles up the NJ Turnpike and out of earshot of most Eagles fans, on WFAN's Boomer and Carton show.

The former Eagles star wide receiver and current radio color commentator admitted that we've seen the Eagles' offense "stink" many a times this year and that it's their defense that has gotten them as far as they did. Not just that. He finally took the franchise' brass down a peg by saying that the team "backed their way into the playoffs" and admitted that he had plans to golf in Carolina this post season but was forced to stick around and cover games.

For fans used to being forced fed talking points about the team being the "gold standard" of the NFL, it was refreshing to hear one of their own admitting that this year's squad should be grateful to be where their at and that it was of their own doing that they are.

Quick rightfully praised they play of Dawkins, Mikell and others on the defensive end for firing up the team. He was also accurate in saying that they Eagles can beat any of the remaining playoff teams, but conversely could also lose to any of them.

On a side note, he told us that the reason that Hank Baskett landed Kendra Wilkenson, who has been hanging around the Philly locker room, is because he is a "big, handsome kid" who "hangs out at the right places."
