Mike Schmidt Offers Scathing (But Fair) Criticism of Werth, Nats

The Phillies Hall of Famer, writing for the AP, points out several relevant points ignored by all parties involved in the right fielder's recent signing with the NL East perennial basement dweller:
He’s durable, can run like a deer, play a Gold Glove right field and hit with power. He can be the real deal, but will he? In Philly, the stars were aligned perfectly for him. Should the Nationals have considered this?

This is what puzzles me about this contract. Are the Nationals in a position to wager $126 million that he can do it all? In Philly, Jayson had men on base on a regular basis with proven players Jimmy Rollins, Shane Victorino and Chase Utley stirring it up. He could stumble into 75 RBIs just by playing everyday, but he only drove in 85 last season.

In Washington, the lineup is young and inexperienced, right-handed dominant, and the park is big, so RBIs will not come as easily. RBIs are much tougher when everyone’s counting. Jayson now will be the man, the cleanup hitter with the burden of production, far surpassing anything he has experienced. His name will be first on the opposition’s “don’t let him beat us” list. If the Nationals don’t come up with a legit left-handed bat behind him, he will quickly see what Ryan Howard had to deal with in Philly...

Is it good business to drop $126 million in the lap of a player who is in the growth stage?

The Phillies had the right plan for Jayson, a plan that worked well for Ryan Howard and Chase Utley. Both were slowly adjusted upward. Ryan was forced to use arbitration, then a competitive multiyear deal and then, after Rookie of the Year, MVP award and averaging 135 RBIs a season, he got his bonanza. Not a gamble, a lock.

Utley’s path was similar. Up through the Phillies system, slowly climbed the salary ladder, became the best second baseman in the game, will jump to Howard money soon. Again, like buying Apple stock, no risk. This is good management. The Phillies were looking for the same for Jayson. He was one 30-homer/100-RBI year from $100-plus million with Philadelphia, and maybe a couple more championship rings with them. But today the open market is irresistible.

From the DC Bureau: Wait Until You See the President's Throw

They may need to design a baseball to complement the President's limp-wristed throwing style.

You do have to appreciate his "nWo" moment when he donned the Black & White. I was waiting for Sting to drop from the rafters and hit Zimmerman with a bat so Barack could tag him.

Nationals Take a Positive Step Towards Racial Progress

This week, the Washington Nationals finally broke down the social stigma that has plagued them for years, and became the last franchise in Major League Baseball to hire a white manager.

Before giving the nod to (white) Jim Riggleman, owner Ted Lerner was long criticized for his strong opposition to hiring Caucasians to manage his squad, despite having no issues signing physically-talented whites to play on the team.

An anonymous source close to the team stated, "Lerner just doesn't believe that old white men have what it takes to coach this young, inexperienced franchise. I really feel the only reason Riggleman was even considered was due to pressure from the League, the Players Association and the Congressional White Caucus. "

Another official pointed out the fact that Lerner goes so far as to mock whites by having interns dress as stereotypical caricatures and run the bases for fans' amusement during every game. "Whites are good for entertaining the masses, not managing small-ball. The Riggleman move shocks me."

From the DC Bureau: DC Signs A Healthcare Bill

The town's been buzzing all day with the news that the greatest Washington National of all time is returning.

Besides being a former All-Star, the burly Cuban is also an M.D.

'It's 99.9 percent I'm not going to pitch no more' this season, [Livan] Hernandez said. 'I'm done, I think, so let's see what happens.

'I'll go to sleep and I'm going to make a decision tonight.'

His knee, drained on May 16, has been a nagging problem all year. The right-hander, who is 12-4 with a 3.44 earned run average, said it was not bothering him enough to affect his pitching and he wasn't told to have the knee worked on.

'It's not the doctors,' he said. 'It's me. I'm the doctor. I don't need it, but I'm going to' have an operation.

'I'll tell you when the season's over,' said Hernandez when pressed for an explanation. 'I'm mad.'

'I have no idea who he's mad at,' The Nationals' manager, Frank Robinson, said."

The DC Bureau tips its hat to the good doctor, and hopes his next prescription is an unlimited refill, for kicking ass.

From The D.C. Bureau: Memo to Advertisers

I don't even know where to begin.

I was watching the Nats/Braves game last night when a Nivea shaving cream commercial came up, and in one of the cuts is a guy, I sh%t you not, shaving his chest. This is unacceptable. MEMO TO ADVERTISERS: WTF? I'm trying to watch a baseball game here, not an instructional video on how to look good for other muscly mens.

I failed in finding this actual ad online (probably for obvious reasons) but I did find something worse, from the same company. Not sure how to break this to you, but they offer actual lessons, lessons for shaving...well, everything.

(I went ahead and flagged it for repulsive content).

I did some more research on this company on the YouTube and found another gem...

Yes, that's right they offer a skin whitening cream. If only Marty Cordova knew about this back in '02.

I've now seen everything.

I'm officially getting all MLK on these fools and begininning a national boycott...at least until my private parts need another shearing.

One Anthem to Rule Them All

At Saturday's Nationals v Diamondbacks game, they finally did in the pre-game what the players have failed to do for most of the season - put on an amazing display of talent. In fact, one could argue he did more with a bat than most of the team thus far.

We don't have the video* but here's the LINK, and it's pretty sweet. You can check out a version where he's not surrounded by flags here:

The only thing that's missing is him going all-out Hendrix and setting it on fire at the end. But I guess that's how the National Symphony Orchestra rolls. Man, when are those guys gonna loosen up a little?

*A brief note to our good friends at MLB. Please provide the embed code for your videos so we can put the video here. You already provide a facebook link, so clearly having it watched on a third party site does not concern you. Wouldn't you rather people watched your footage instead of looking at the screen cap and then a YouTube video that's not yours? It lessens everyone's experience. Just a helpful suggestion.

The Cynic's Confessions of an E-6 Mind: Life as a Washington Nationals Fan

Much to no one’s surprise, the Washington Nationals (26-61) recently announced that they have fired manager Manny Acta. While reaction is mixed (some say it was overdue, I think it’s a little like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic), it’s just the latest in the epic fail that is the 2009 Washington Nationals. So with the All Star break here and the season mercifully on the downhill slide, I thought I might provide some commentary from a Nationals fan.

First of all, pleased to meet you. Unless you live inside the 495 Beltway, there’s a very good chance that this is the first time you’ve ever met (or seen anything written from the point of view of) a Nats fan.. Even inside the 202 area code, true fans are hard to find. The problem (other than the team being lousy) is that very few people are actually from Washington, DC. If you go to a party or meet someone at a bar in DC, the first question you ask is, “So where are you from?” DC is a very transient city, with people (mostly government workers and contractors) coming to the city from other places. And they bring along their own team allegiances. While they may enjoy a night out at a Nationals ball game, they still classify themselves as Yankees or Braves or Dodgers etc. fans. The number of true know-the-lineup-and-follow-the-box-scores-every-day-even-though-you-already-know-they-lost Nationals fans (such as myself) is
very, very few.

The Nats bandwagon. Plenty of good seats still available.

To understand my fascination with the Nats, it might help to know a little about my baseball history. I grew up a huge Oakland A’s fan. I didn’t have any connection to the A’s per se. But my dad had grown up as a Kansas City A’s fan (to this day, he still hates the Yankees from when the days when the A’s and Yankees owners conspired to send all of KC’s good players to the Big Apple) and it just kind of rubbed off on me. But I definitely went all the way with it—my room was covered wall-to-wall with A’s paraphernalia. Canseco, McGwire, Rickey Henderson, you name it. I had a poster of Carney Lansford up next to my Bash Brothers poster, for Pete’s sake. If a west coast A’s game was on TV, there was a really good chance I was going to fall asleep at some point in school the next morning.

Yeah, this guy.

Then came they day when the A’s traded Jose Canseco to the Texas Rangers. And suddenly, I just stopped caring. I wouldn’t say it was entirely the Canseco trade that did it. The team with which I had grown up and had won three straight AL pennants (1988-1990) was slowly being dismantled. And about the same time, school got busy and I got into jobs, cars and girls (not necessarily in that order). But losing Canseco, the sports idol of my youth, was the final straw and baseball as a whole just kind of faded away for me for several years.

Admittedly, I might not be the best judge of character.

Fast forward to 2002. I was living in Washington, DC when the Montreal Expos collapse became complete and the team was bought by MLB.. Almost immediately, the rumors started flying that Washington, DC was a frontrunner for the team and, although it took another couple of years, Washington baseball became official in September 2004. And I lined up to drink the Kool-Aid.

Prior to my time in DC, I’d never lived in a big-league city. I grew up in Colorado and maintained my Broncos loyalty, so the Redskins didn’t do anything for me. And, while I like hockey and basketball well enough, I wasn’t a big enough fan to jump on the Capitals or Wizards bandwagons. But when the Nationals came to town, I finally felt like I had MY baseball team and I cared about baseball again.. Which brings us to 2009, when the loyalties of even the most die-hard fans have been tested.

This season has been one debacle after the other:

If you’d submitted this as a script for a “Bad News Bears” sequel, it would have been laughed out of Hollywood for not being believable. Things have gotten so bad, the Nats are even being mocked by The Onion.

I hear the Nats are looking for a new manager.

So is this the worst team ever, as some bloggers and MSM writers have asked? I don’t think so. Contrary to popular belief, this team is not devoid of talent. Ronnie Belliard, Cristian Guzman and Ryan Zimmerman are all former or current All-Stars. Four starters (Zimmerman, Guzman, 1B Nick Johnson and OF Josh Willingham) are hitting ..288 or better. OF Adam Dunn just became the fifth-fastest player in history to reach 300 home runs. While no one is likely to confuse the Nationals’ lineup with Murderer’s Row, there are worse offenses out there.

The same could be said of starting pitching. The Nationals current starting five is a combined 13-23. Admittedly not great, but far better than the bullpen and spot starters (here’s where it gets really ugly) who are on the hook for a combined record of 13-38. Even worse, they find ways to blow it at the worst possible times.

23 times this season the Nationals have been tied or had a lead going into the last two innings, only to see the bullpen blow it. Think about that—in more than a quarter of the team’s games this season, Nats fans are sitting there, thinking our team has a chance to pull one out, only to see the bullpen choke another one away. I don’t think the 2009 Nationals are the worst team ever, but I would certainly nominate this bunch for the worst bullpen in history.

“Now pitching for the Nationals . . .”

As for me and all 6,743 of my fellow die-hard Nationals fans, we’re keeping the faith (bless us, oh almighty Stephen Strasburg). We came into this season knowing the Nationals would probably lose. A lot. They’re on a pace to have 114 losses, and they may challenge the 1962 Mets record of 120. We just wish they’d stop finding creative and increasingly painful ways to do it.

Nats President Downplays First Pick of Phenom Stephen Strasburg

The Nationals have been a comedy of errors since the team's relocation to the Nation's Capitol. In an post today at GQ.com with Nats president Stan Kasten, interviewer Nate Penn does little to sugar coat. Hell, the title is even: "The Really, God Awful, Bad News Bears: Are the Washington Nationals the worst franchise in history?"

In addition to touching on the team's mediocrity, Penn also asks point blank about the direction Washington will head in tomorrow's MLB draft, where the team has the #1 pick and experts have all but locked San Diego State's Stephen Strasburg in that slot.

Amanda Wurlitzer?

Stephen Strasburg could do for the Nats what Lincecum has done for the Giants. Undoubtedly there’s a fair amount of pressure to draft him. Will you do it and can you sign him?

On June 9th we’re going to take the player we think is the best player. We know what #1 picks get; we expect to sign our guy. The system isn’t going to change for any one circumstance, for any one situation. We know how players get drafted, how they get paid, how long it takes them to develop, what steps are necessary. We’re gonna take the best player we can.

Nick Johnson, The Big Dipper

From DC-based reader "Blue":

"So I was reading about he Nats today and I clicked on Nick Johnson's thumbnail because I was surprised to see that he was still in the majors and didn't retire 3 years ago. Anyways, he has what has to be the most awesomely hilarious official team photo this side of Antonio Alfonseca's extra half-digit. You'll see it right here, but the man is sporting a Dykstra-esque dip the size of a golf ball in his lower lip. Then I looked at his batting average and the dude is hitting .373! I'm on my way to go buy a can of Skoal."

Separated at Birth: The Sickly Curly W

Depressing, isn't it, Nats fans? What's that? No one out there is actually a Nats fan? All the same.

Whoda thunk Mark Teixeira would opt for legendary pinstripes as opposed to the Walgreens dubya?

BREAKING: Bowden and Rijo get probed

Thanks to Nationals Pride for the heads up....

Federal authorities and Major League Baseball are investigating Washington Nationals general manager Jim Bowden and special assistant Jose Rijo for their possible roles in a growing financial scandal involving the signing of players from the Dominican Republic, several sources familiar with the probe told ESPN.

Must not have taken that much cash, he could have bought some better wheels.

Video of Nats Acting Like "Softball Girls"

Nelson Figueroa after a 10-4 loss to the Nats said: "They were cheerleading in the dugout like a bunch of softball girls. If that's what a last-place team needs to do to fire themselves up, so be it. They need to show a little more class and professionalism."

Looking at this footage of Lastings Milledge, Paul LoDuca, Dimiti Young and company, we can't say we disagree. While girls just want to have fun, there is no place for this in professional baseball.

Nats in the Habit of Trading Away Hot Wives

Our friend Ian at NationalsPride.com brought to our attention a very unfortunate trend going on in the Nation's Capitol.

The Nats recently traded away Ryan Church and Brian Schneider and released John Patterson.

This also lead to the departure from DC of Mrs. Patterson/Miss DC 2005 Sarah Shambeau and Mrs. Church and Mrs. Schneider.

Nats faithful are now sweating the potential loss of Mrs. Felipe Lopez.

With this kind of tail fleeing the city en masse is it any wonder why visiting Governors have to ship in $5000 out-of-state hookers?

National Headache

Our friend Ian from NationalsPride.com has been a Nats season ticket holder since the the Spos' relocation to DC.

After he proudly displayed this year's packaging in his Business of Baseball blog, he was more than disheartened, like many Nats' fans yesterday, in his attempt to score opening day seats online, noting "Like apparently tens of thousands of you, I’m stuck in the “Washington Nationals Virtual Waiting Room” attempting to buy tickets for Opening Day."

He rightfully added, "Something isn’t right here. How’s it possible that it’s taken now 23 minutes just for the system to have the bandwidth to give me “an opportunity to request” the tickets I’d have to pay a ridiculous amount of money for? 24 minutes."

Apparently he wasn't the only one, as he encouraged fans to voice their frustrations in the comment section.

Some way to treat your faithful fan base. Dare we say DC is disenfranchising them? Ian's right. Especially due to the fact that he shells out big bucks every year and with the city's tax payers shelling out $611 million for the new stadium. Washington politics at its finest.

Update: The WaPo (via SbB) touched on fans' frustrations briefly, while more highlighting the bliss of ecstatic ownership.
