Commercial CRitic: Athletes a No Show for Super Bowl

Commercials. No Jordan, no Bird, not even Peyton or Brees during the NFL Network commercial. Athletes pockets are empty this Super Bowl as the endorsement deals went elsewhere.

I was anticipating a long night squirreling together a blog post as the resident commercial critic, but I get to hit the sack early tonight.

Hollywood dominated the commercial space digging into Stan Lee's waste basket to find a blockbuster. Eminem's anti-endorsement mantra snags him two deals eclipsing the entire rosters of the NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL combined.

Unless A-Rod was actually previewing a Rom-Com with Cameron Diaz about popcorn, commercial execs are wildly throwing their money at a new approach that leaves athletes having to actually be good at their sport to earn a paycheck.

And yes, I did see Danica Patrick. Enough said.

Things I Know I Know: Someone Needs to Teach Peter King About the Legislative Process

Says PK in today's MMQB:

"d. Congress: I know you've got more pressing things on your plate, but that law you passed about commercials not being played at a higher volume than regular programming? In the Ravens-Chiefs game, unless my ears were playing tricks on me, it was happening big-time."

But, as he should know, legislation does not usually become immediately effective. A quick look shows the bill goes into effect a year after passage.

SEC. 2. RULEMAKING ON LOUD COMMERCIALS REQUIRED.

(a) Regulation Required- Within 1 year after the date of enactment of this Act, the Federal Communications Commission shall prescribe pursuant to the Communications Act of 1934 (47 U.S.C. 151 et seq.) a regulation that is limited to incorporating by reference and making mandatory (subject to any waivers the Commission may grant pursuant to subsection (b)(2)) the `Recommended Practice: Techniques for Establishing and Maintaining Audio Loudness for Digital Television' (A/85), and any successor thereto, approved by the Advanced Television Systems Committee, only insofar as such recommended practice concerns the transmission of commercial advertisements by a television broadcast station, cable operator, or other multichannel video programming distributor.

(b) Implementation-

(1) EFFECTIVE DATE- The Federal Communications Commission shall prescribe that the regulation adopted pursuant to subsection (a) shall become effective 1 year after the date of its adoption.

Play Him Off, Waylon: Randy Moss, Good Ol' Boy

While people pile on Randy, just remember that his uncouth behavior has always been in his Appalachian blood, and has always been part of his charm.

One of my favorite commercials ever...

Jon Runyan Releases 2nd Television Ad Online

As mentioned earlier this week, the former Oiler, Titan, Eagle and Charger's campaign bid for Congress in South Jersey heated up when charges were lobbed against his opponent for apparently planting a bogus Tea Party Candidate.

Yesterday, Runyan released a 2nd TV spot on his Blog, Facebook and YouTube pages.

McNabb Brings the Funny in IHOP Commercial

The fat quarterback holds his own at first.

But this clip had Philly fans booing and calling for Michael Vick to replace him as IHOP spokesman.

From The D.C. Bureau: Memo to Advertisers

I don't even know where to begin.

I was watching the Nats/Braves game last night when a Nivea shaving cream commercial came up, and in one of the cuts is a guy, I sh%t you not, shaving his chest. This is unacceptable. MEMO TO ADVERTISERS: WTF? I'm trying to watch a baseball game here, not an instructional video on how to look good for other muscly mens.

I failed in finding this actual ad online (probably for obvious reasons) but I did find something worse, from the same company. Not sure how to break this to you, but they offer actual lessons, lessons for shaving...well, everything.

(I went ahead and flagged it for repulsive content).

I did some more research on this company on the YouTube and found another gem...

Yes, that's right they offer a skin whitening cream. If only Marty Cordova knew about this back in '02.

I've now seen everything.

I'm officially getting all MLK on these fools and begininning a national boycott...at least until my private parts need another shearing.

FreeDarko Collaborates with adidas

Blogs With Balls panelist Bethlehem Shoals, known as “Nathaniel Friedman” to stuffier editors, is the founder, chief contributor and editor-in-chief of FreeDarko.com, whose Macrophenomenal Pro Basketball Almanac was published last fall by Bloomsbury, USA.

This week, Shoals, with FD artist Jacob Weinstein, teamed up with adidas “on two fully animated videos highlighting the inner-workings of Dwight [Howard] and Derrick [Rose].”

Reads an adidas press release: “FreeDarko’s uncanny analysis of both Dwight and Derrick spotlights their roles as the ultimate Commander and Creator, leading their teams and the performance revolution of the game. ”

The videos, like Macrophenomenal Pro Basketball Almanac, are a thing of beauty. But more specifically, the collaboration is a testament to the idea of companies working with online influencers to reach targeted markets in creative new ways and mediums.

Blast the Hell Out of Turkeys

I'm enjoying my daily ritual of watching the wacky antics of Mr. Noodle on Sesame Street/Elmo, when my daughter, as she is prone to do, starts playing with the remote and flips on some outdoors channel. Next thing I know, carnage breaks out.

Tom Teasers, shooting the sh*t out of birds, and terrorizing children and parents since God-knows-when.

Mexico Pissed About Being Stereotyped as Short, Stocky Wrestlers

Funny commercial, no? Think again, racist pig.

The spot for the "Texican" ("The taste of Texas with a little spicy Mexican") has prompted Mexico's ambassador to Spain to write a letter to "Burger King's offices in that nation objecting to the ad and asking that it be removed. Jorge Zermeno told Radio Formula that the ads "improperly use the stereotyped image of a Mexican.""

Something tells me this would not be an acceptable option either...

This, however...perfectly acceptable.

Gatorade Continues to Evolve

After the cryptic series of "What is G" spots for the newly branded thirst-quencher, Gatorade is re-tweaking not only their ad strategies, but their products as well.

To help launch the reformulated Gatorade Tiger Focus as Tiger makes his comeback at the Masters, the company developed a new animated spot which aired this morning on ESPN and MTV, "Woods of Wisdom."

It's an interesting strategy. While most sports drinks tout the physical benefits of their products, Gatorade is touting Tiger Focus as "advanced hydration to help promote mental focus, as inspired by Tiger Woods’ legendary mental toughness."

Not something you think of when stopping in the 7-11 for a bottle on the way to the slo-pitch game, is it? But hell. If the science is there, who knows? If this takes off, perhaps a drink line with rocket scientists and MIT students isn't too far off!

Get Dunked On By Patrick Chewing

This has made the rounds on some other sites, but this commercial is just great for Snickers. Starring my favorite NBA Player ever, Patrick Ewing, it is a quick spot for Snickers where Ewing just shatters a backboard with a dunk. He then just walks away and says "oops." The best part is that Ewing has restored his classic hi-top fade.
